Balthasar Zopfi (b. Mar 31, 1841, d. Jan 03, 1903)
Notes for Balthasar Zopfi:
Balthazar Zopfi came to America with his parents, Johnnes Zopfi and Verena Egger Zopfi in 1860.Enroute to Minnesota they stopped in Illinois to visit his mother's brother. His aunt and uncle Egger wanted him to stay with them as they were childless.Verena did not grant him permission to stay and they continued their journey to Minnesota.
At Maple Grove (Northwest of Osseo) they settled. Here Balthazar again met a girl, Regula Blesi, from Schwanden, Switzerland, whom he had ignored and considered beneath his family.(According to Wayne Blesi, it was just the other way around and the Blesi family was of the higher birth.Maybe some day I will determine just who is correctmy Aunt Mary, (Maria Zopfi) who wrote this or Wayne Blesi.)
Regula had left Switzerland with her sister's family.(This was prior to Balthazar's leaving) It took them fourty days by sailing boat on which two of the sisters' children died and were buried at sea.Arriving in St. Paul, Minnesota, she walked from that city to Anoka and made her home with her sister until her marriage.
Balthazar & Regula, after their marriage, built a log house of one large room with a shanty type room on the side, and two rooms upstairs. This home was built behind the later Peter Zopfi home on a hill overlooking Mud Lake. They farmed their many acres with oxen.
Balthazar did not serve in the Civil War.He paid a substitute to go in his place.
On November 15, 1882, they move into a new home with many rooms. (This home remained in the family for many years until the property was sold to the Hennepin County Park System at which time it was destroyed and the property became a part ofElm Creek Park...Byron Van Dake)This house was home to Peter Zopfi and his family. The day Balthazar and Regula moved into their new home was also the day they welcomed home his father, Johannes Zopfi, who had made a return visit to Switzerland.Johannes brought back several small spruce seedlings which he planted in the St Fridolin Cemetery.Today these trees are very tall, and may very soon die.
Johannes died six weeks after the untimely death of his son, Balthazar in 1903.
