On a newspaper article about A Report of Progress at PPG, again Robert wrote 1959 The year men 68 years old had to retire by Virtue of contract between Company and Union Local 12. He also stated I was 72 years old on Nov 18. Went out July 1959. A letter written and signed by Thomas G. Mosley, Secretary of Local #6576 paying tribute to retiring President Robert G. Poston and mentions his accomplishments in the past 7 years of his term as President of Local #6576. I'm not sure the year of this letter. I also have a United Mine Workers of America Receipt Card for Dues for 1972 for Robert G. Poston of Local Union #6576 District 5 and shows him paid through December of 1972. The death notice in the Valley News Dispatch states "after suffering a heart attack, Robert was employed by PPG Industries., Creighton, where he worked until his retirement in 1946. Notes for E
THEL IRENE SOUTHERLAND:
Ethel Irene was born in the same house in Saxon KY., Laurel County
that her husband Robert Givens Poston was born in. Five years and six
months after him.
They died in the same hospital (Allegheny Valley Hospital in Natrona
Heights, PA 10 years and 2 months apart. She died first. Ethel was an active member and a steward of Millerstown Methodist Church. she was also a member of its Women's Society of Christian Service and of the Friendship Bible Class of its church school. She was also a member of the Lizzie Miller Bible Class of Tarentum First Methodist Church and a member of Highland Fire Co. Auxiliary, in Tarentum, PA. Ethel was survived at this time by a brother, Daniel Southerland, and a sister, Mrs. Ann V. Lett, both of Jellice, Tenn. I have Brothers listed as Elbert, John and William. I don't know who Daniel is.
A memorable tid bit. Grandma Poston (Ethel) loved to ride in a car. It did not matter where the car was going or why, she just like to ride. After Grandpa's retirement they used to go to Fort Lauderdale, Florida and stay for the winter with her daughter and son in law Bonnie and Will Daley. Their boys loved to play jokes on her. She would hear one of the boys talking about going here or there so she would leave the house ahead of them and go sit in the car. Grandma was quite heavy and it took her longer to move. When they came out of the house they would purposely go to another car. Grandma would scramble as fast as she could to get to the other car. Most of the time they would go to her before she got out and they would go in that car. They always told her they would not go without her. Her grandsons thought it was quite hilarious. Grandma did too.

Ethel's Mother, Hanna Evaline Southerland, died about September of 1914. On the 1900 census for Laurel Co, Crossroads, Kentucky, Ethel and her brother Johnnie are listed under Jason and Emma Evans and their daughter Jennie. This would be Ethel's grandparents on her mother's side.

Marriage Notes for R
OBERT POSTON and ETHEL SOUTHERLAND:
Robert lived in Tennessee and Ethel lived in Pittsburgh, KY. when they applied for their marriage license. Wm Southerland and Josan Evans were present at the marriage in Pittsburgh, KY and the Reverend John J. Barrett officiated. They celebrated their Golden Wedding in April of 1959. A dinner at Fawn Fire hall #1 and a reception at the Millerstown Methodist Church. Have copy of the news article. Recollecting their wedding day, Mr & Mrs Poston never would have believed that a marriage with such a harassing beginning would last 50 years (plus 8 more years). Robert recalled how he had to walk 4 1/2 miles to London, KY. to secure a license to marry the former Ethel I Southerland of Pittsburgh, Ky. The marriage license in his pocket, Robert, began the hike back home when a violent thunderstorm developed and he had only flashes of lightening to guide him home. Rev John J. Barrett, pastor of the Pittsburgh First Baptist Church officiated at the nuptials in the bride's home. As the ceremony continued on and on, the bridegroom began getting nervous. He was thinking of the 4 1/2 mile walk he and his bride had to the railroad station to catch a train for their honeymoon destination. "Trains were few and far between in those days," recalls Robert, "and the minister just kept praying and praying." But the prayer cane to an end and the honeymoon couple went on to establish a home in Jellico, Tenn. In the years that followed they lived in nine different states. After moving to Godfrey, near Leechburg in 1921, they adopted Pennsylvania as their "home" moving to Tarentum in 1925. Good wishes came from Ethel Poston's father, William Southerland, 88 years old in 1959 and living in East Bernsteadt, Ky.
