The Cuddeford Family Home Page

Updated December 24, 2004

The Cuddeford family has a proud history of intellectual curiosity that has established roots in England and has sown its seeds in Europe, North America and Australia. There are doctors, lawyers, teachers, artists and craftsmen. We all can find our earliest beginnings in Devonshire.

The spelling of our surname has several variations. Unified spelling reform didn’t happen until the 1880s in Great Britain and the United States. Surname spelling and pronunciation has evolved over centuries. Among the humbler classes of European society, and especially among the illiterate, individuals had little choice but to accept the mistakes of officials, clerks, and priests who officially bestowed upon them new versions of their surnames, just as they had meekly accepted the surnames which they were born with. In many cases, the current generation may be aware of the change. However, in many cases the change of the surname occurred so long ago that they are not aware of the original spelling and pronunciation of their surname.

The following is from Barry Cuddeford’s family history newsletter: “Have you ever wondered where our surname comes from? It is an unusual name and comparatively rare. Many English surnames end in ‘-ham’, ‘-ton’, ‘-ley’ or ‘-ford’, and they are usually place-names. We can be reasonably sure that Cuddeford is the name of a place. I have searched for a place called Cuddeford and it does not exist today. However, place names do get changed over the centuries and I have found a place in Devonshire which appears in the Domesday Book as Codeford. In the 13th Century it had changed to Cuddeford and is now called Coddiford. It is a tiny group of farms and cottages near Cheriton Fitzpaine, a few miles west of the road from Exeter to Tiverton.”

Since 1996 the Cuddeford family has gathered together in what has become a biennial event to become reacquainted and enjoy our commonality. Cousins from Great Britain, Canada, Australia and the United States have met, in some cases, for the first time. In 1996, we gathered in Genoa, Nebraska; in 1998, Tualatin, Oregon; in 2000, Tsawassen, British Columbia; in 2002, Santa Rosa, California; and in 2004, Tualatin, Oregon, again. The next gathering will be held in Hamilton, Montana, 2006. In 2001, many of us made a pilgrimage to our ancestral homes in England, many of which are in Devonshire.

This home page in being updated for the first time since October 2000. It, hopefully, will be updated more frequently in the future. For more information about this family, visit Barry Cuddeford's site (click on his link below).
