A Cuddeford family reunion picnic is definitely set for July 29, 2000. We will meet in Tsawwassen (30 minutes south of Vancouver) at Dieffenbaker Park from 11 - 4. There will be a barbeque and lots of activities. There is a sheltered picnic area (in case of rain), and nearby washrooms. For accommodations and vacation planning, please call 1-800-HELLO BC (1-800-435-5622 toll free in North America) or 250-387-1642 (outside North America) to receive Accommodations 2000 and Vacation Planner. You will the receive the information promptly via mail (gratis). Detailed is a selection of hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts, and RV parks which may be booked by calling the same number listed above. Best bets for close proximity to the picnic are The Beach Grove Guest House, Best Western Tsawwassen Inn, Cedar Inn of Tsawwassen, Parkcanada Recreational Vehicle Inns, Southlandís House By the Sea B&B, and Tsawwassen Motel at Sundance Place.

Sunday, July 30, tentatively planned is a brunch at a local restaurant. Other activities could include horseback riding, waterslide park, driving range, and a visit to Reiffel wildlife preserve. These would be arranged impromptu at the picnic. Please bring photos of your family to share. We'll have a world map showing the parts of the globe from whence family members have come. Hopefully we can arrange a showing of the family video.

Those who plan to attend, kindly R.S.V.P. by June 30, 2000, to Cheryl (addresses shown below). Please let us know if you would like to attend the brunch, as this would need to be specifically booked.

If you have questions or special needs or concerns, please contact Cheryl Cuddeford by e-mail at cheryl_cuddeford@telus.net. It would help tremendously if those who have e-mail capability would use it! If you do not have e-mail, please write to: Cheryl Cuddeford, 1186 Garden Grove Place,

The year 2000 is the last year of this millennium and the international Cuddeford family will gather for the third time this century to celebrate roots that have been traced back to our common progenitors, James Cuddeford (1717-1790) and Elizabeth Helmore, in Ide and Newton St. Cyres, Devonshire, England. James was unique, as far as we know, in spelling his surname as we do today; his siblings spelled it Cuttiford. There are several variations, however, on the spelling of our surname due to the lax spelling rules of the past.

Over the years, the family has spread to Scotland, Ireland, Switzerland, France, Canada, the United States, and Australia. The main branch of the family tree has been well established through the meticulous research of Barry Cuddeford (Kenilworth, Warwickshire) and Norman Cuddeford (Rottingdean on the English Channel) in the United Kingdom. Barry and Norman have concluded a search that extends our family line two more generations back to Robert Cutteford during the reign of Charles I (before 1650). Barry can be contacted via the Internet at cuddeford@LineOne.net.

Our cousin John Durant, whose ancestry with us began with Mary Ann Cuddeford (1796) and Samuel Brock Durant, has been diligently working on our Australian branch of the tree, as well as the Canadian Durant line. His presence at the 1998 family gathering was a highlight. John can be reached via the Internet at jdurant@chariot.net.au.

There are three Canadian Cuddeford lines, including a Durant line. The line that hails from Tavistock, Devonshire, England has been fine tuned through the efforts of Ruth Cuddeford Harris (elwin_harris@telus.net) and Marjorie Cuddeford Young. Lauren Gregory (shafer@mag-net.com) is closely related to the Cuddefords in the United States and Norman Cuddeford in the United Kingdom, and has been helpful with the information for this Canadian branch of the family.

A Swiss-French line has been confirmed added when Marc Finlay Cuddeford contacted us from Rouen, France. He can be reached at mcath@normandnet.fr.

Family Photos

  • Gary Cuddeford and John Durant (219 KB)
This is my favorite picture from the 1998 Gathering of Cuddefords (family reunion) in Tualatin, Oregon. Gary is a local cousin, and John is our favorite cousin from Australia. The Cuddefords speak several dialects of English, but they don't always understand them (as can be seen in this picture).
