It is thought that Gabriel arrived with the Ninety-ninth Regiment of Foot in the area of what is now Ottawa, Ontario in 1818. This regiment was disbanding. In order to recieve a grant of land the members of the regiment were required to help found the new settlement of Richmond, Ontario. According to Katharine Fletcher's book, Historical Walks, The Gatineau Park Story, John Dunlop, who had a cabin near Camp Fortune in 1900, "was a hardy pioneer who at the turn of the century gave up the fight against bears, trees and shrubs, and moved his house and wares down the valley". (page 18). Pioneer neighbours of the Dunlops were the Mulvihill, Daly, Carroll, Lacharity, Jeremiah Sheehan, William Jeffs and Asa Meech families. Dunlap died last Friday night, under distressing circmstances. He lived in the city, east Ward and worked his farm, about four miles out on the Peshtigo road. About 10 o'clock that night, as he had done before, he started for Marinette with a load of hay. He was soon seized with cramps but was unable to arrest the attention of any one until he gone about four miles on his road, where he was taken in by a farmer and cared for as well as possible, but soon expired. Nr. Dunlap was fifty years old, had lived in Oconto about twenty years, and until within a few years was employed in the woods. His wife and five children survive him.
