Notes for JOSEPH ETHIER: [Brøderbund WFT Vol. 1, Ed. 1, Tree #1963, Date of Import: Mar 23, 1996] 11/3/94 Took a Picture of Grave at Rudolph, WI "old" Cemetery on 5th Ave. So of Hwy. C. will add to file. There were several "Akey" grave stones that I also photographed but at this point don't recognize the name. There was also a stone for a "Rayome" and I didn't know why I recognized the name. Later I looked it up and found out Joseph's daughter married a L. Rayome, I'll have to return to see if there is any connection. Note from the Shannon C. Murphy Prescott FTM homepage: Atchey, aka Akey, or Atchie, or Ethier. This family is of French origins, having moved from France to Quebec, Canada. When their home burned, the family moved from Canada to Wisconsin in 1852. In order to "Americanize" the name, the name was changed from Ethier to Achie. However, people mispronounced the name so it was changed again to Atchey and to Akey. Notes for ROSE DELINA JOSLIN: From the Grand Rapids Tribune Grand Rapids, Wisconsin April 27, 1904 (Now Wisconsin Rapids, Wi.) The photo copy of the article was too poor to reproduce. I got this 1/11/1995 from the Wood county Library. Dan. The Wood county Court House's record called her "Rose Alma Akey" in the death record. All the dates, etc., match except the middle name. He was a wonderful fiddle player as attested by the local newspapers of his day which document his participation in a statewide fiddle playing contest. He writes that he is playing "Red Wing." He then bought 55 acres in Remington Township, and also took 55 as a homestead, with the intention of entering into the cranberry business but on account of losses by fire he sold that land and entered into the real estate business in Rudolph, which he has since followed here. One of the first real estate men in this part of the county, he has located a good many settlers it, doing his best to get them well started in good locations. Named changed to Akey about 1895 11/3/94 I stopped at the Portage county Court House to check on the Marriage information for John Ethier/Akey. It showed he married Cora Herrick on July 29, 1882 in Junction City, WI. The witnesses were Harrison Harrick, her brother and Mary King. A couple of discrepancies came from the marriage record also It list John as being born in Canada, we show Theresa. WI and Cora being born in Washara County, WI, we show Rudolph, WI -- Washara County borders Wood County so that may not be a big deal-- It also listed the mother of the husband, John, as being Matilda Mosher -- we show it to be Rose Delima Joslin. These are reproductions of articles that Grandma Gentz ( Cora Akey ) had kept over the years. The "Bear Book" is a compilation of John Akey travels with Queenie the Bear's travels and adventures around the country and world in the late teens and early 1920's. Most of them come from the Merrill Daily Hearld citing other newspapers. Very few dates appear on the clippings. These refer to John Akey only. Other articles from the "Bear Book" are under the heading of the people they refer to. Enjoy! Dan Clavette, 1995 BEAR LEARNING TO ROLLER SKATE MAKES GREAT PROGRESS WITH-IN LAST TEN DAYS. IS OWNED BY LOCAL BUSINESS MAN. John Akey, the Second street business man, has been quite busy the past ten days teaching his bear to roller skate. Mr. Akey has only had the bear for about three weeks and for the past ten days has been teaching it to skate at the Union Roller rink. From the progress that has been made in that time, Merrill will undoubted be made famous by being made the home of two roller skating bears. Geo. Crapsey has traveled for several years with Alice Teddy; and is known not only in this country, but has also exhibited for the crowned heads of Europe. _______________________________ CUB BEAR DRIVES AUTO EAU CLAIRE PAPER LAUDS TRAINED ANIMAL BELONGING TO LOCAL MAN. The followiung is another clipping relative to John Akey's trained bear, that will be read with interest. taken from the Eau Leader: "John Akey was in the city yeaterday day exhibiting his pet trained bear while on his way to fill several engagements with show houses. Mr. Akey is a brother of E. J. Akey, who for a long time was connected with the Leader and Telegram as advertising manager. Mr. Akey lives at Merrill, and it was at that place he trained the cub bear to do the stunts that it has mastered to perfection. It is now 27 months old and has been on exhibition for the last year. The cub goes by the name of `Queenie' and can swing on a swing, walk up a ladder, and waltz to almost any tune that can be played. 'Queenie' can also play bucking broncho and when it comes to dancing the tango some of the best tangoists are not in it. One of the feature stunts that is done is wrestling and the way that 'Queenie' goes at it shows that she is not an amateur. "During the afternoon the bear was taken out on the street for a sight seeing trip running a Ford car. The bear accomplishes this feat almost as well as a man. `Queenie' sits in the front seat and places her paws on the steering wheel. She does this alone with nobody sitting in the front seat and takes the corners by the best of driving. She also obeys the street traffic laws by keeping on its own side of the street. From Eau Claire Mr. Akey will take his bear to Chippewa Falls." _____________________________________ AKEY'S BEAR AT PORTAGE QUEEN WAS CAPTURED MAY 28, LAST, FIFTEEN MILES FROM THIS, CITY. The following article was clipped from a recent edition of the Portage Daily Register and will be read with interest by local people: "The people who were about the streets Monday were given the unusual sight of seeing a bear driving an automobile. The sight was an unusual and much commotion was created to get a peek at this bruin at his new job. The animal was owned by John Akey of Merrill and is known about the fair and show circles as Foxey Queen. She drives a car us through the main streets, making all the turnouts and appears to be a cautious driver. Mr. Akey is seated with the bear on the front seat and she presides at the steering wheel absolutely., Mr. Akey pointing the direction she is to take. "'Queen was captured , May 28, last, fifteen miles from Merrill.' Said Mr. Akey, 'and we have been busy domesticating her since. She appears to take a liking to humans and performs roller skating stunts as well as other tricks. We are touring the state giving exhibitions with Queen and expect to give the people of Portage a chance to see her perform.' "Akey has a large collection of wild animals at his place in Merrill, a bear, monkey, porcupine, coon, wild cats and ferrets mingle with the patrons of his place at the northern city. "Akey is a personal friend. of George Crapsey, who was here at the fair a few years ago with his world famous "Alice Teddy" the roller skating bear which is now exhibiting Manitoba and has netted Mr. Crapsey over $55,00O." (There was a handwritten note by Grandma Gentz ( Cora Akey )that "this was the first bear Dad had." There are not any date on the articles. _______________________________________ MERRILL'S BEAR AT MANITOWOC UNUSUAL SIGHT OF BEAR DRIVING FORD CAR ATTRACTS CONSIDERABLE ATTENTION. The following article was clipped from the Manitowoc Herald and will be read with interest by the many friends of John Akey in this city: "John Akey, a Merrill man, is a lover of animals and says he would sooner trust some four-legged species than many of the two-legged kind. To prove his consistency, Akey, who is here for the county fair, has dispensed with the service of his chauffeur and has installed 'Queen,' a trained bear, in charge of his Ford car and the unusual sight of the bear at the wheel of the car driving about the city streets today attracted much attention. "Thus far no formal protest has been made against the bear chauffeur. The police say that they have not been able to find that any statute is being violated and have not interfered with Mr. Akey's car and the owner says that if he is willing to entrust himself to Queen no one else ought to mind. "The law contains provisions intended to stop any person or persons from reckless driving but Queen does not profess to be a person. The law against intoxicated persons driving a car does not apply as Queen's sex waves her and she has not taken to drink. "Mr. Akey drove here from Merrill yesterday and Queen is to be one of the attractions on the Pike at the county fair. This bear has been trained by its owner to do numerous stunts, such as roller skating, riding a bicycle, skipping the rope and other acts. Mr. Akey has had the bear for several months." ______________________________ TRAINED BEAR AT WAUSAU CREATES A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF INTEREST - GUIDES AUTOMOBILE ABOUT THE STREETS John Akey of Merrill, was in Wausau Tuesday with his performing bear and created considerable amount of interest. The bear guided an automobile about the street for some time and appeared to enjoy the sport. Among the other accomplishments of the animal are roller skating and wrestling, at both of which it is considered an adept. Mr. Akey is a lover of animals and has at present a wild cat, fox, monkey and several trained porcupines. He expects to exhibit the animals at the fairs this fall and later to vaudeville. --Wausau Herald ______________________________ TRAINED BEARS GOES SWIMMING ANIMAL BELONGING TO JOHN AKEY PERFORMS MIRACULOUS "STUNTS." The following clipping from the Rice Lake Journal, regarding John Akey, of this city, and his trained bear, will be read with interest: "The attraction of the week at Rice Lake was 'Queen' the wonder bear. John Akey of Merrill, Wis., is the owner. He is a hunter of considerable experience and naturally took a liking to wild animals. Many times he caught wild animals and trained them, particularly bears. On May 28, 1915, he captured 'Queen' and began to train her, with tricks. To his surprise she proved to be the most intelligent, bear he bad run across. She learned quickly and by the 4th day of July following her capture she was doing stunts for large crowds through the state. `Queen' was in Rice Lake Monday evening and attracted two packed houses at the Lyric that evening. Everybody was pleased with the performance. The wrestling match was staged with Mr. Beaudrie and proved to be an exciting encounter. "During the afternoon the bear went swimming with the kids in the lake, affording a great amusement for the children and for the spectators. `Queen' enjoyed the sport as much as anybody. Another stunt that `Queen' performs is to drive an automobile. She drove a Ford all over town Monday afternoon and it is really a comical sight to see a bear doing this stunt. She also skates on roller and ice skates and does many other things that make her one of the most interesting animal performers that has visited these parts. "Mr. Akey is a resident of Merrill for many years and believes in square dealing with the public. Whenever he stages a show the people are sure to get their moneys worth. Mr. Akey has a little monkey that he uses in his performances on stage. This animal can be left by Mr. Akey anywhere and will be there until his master's return." ___________________________ JOHN AKEY WILL GO TO SO. AMERICA TRICK BEAR, "QUEEN," GAINING FAMOUS REPUTATION THROUGHOUT STATES THE HERALD, is in receipt of a letter from John Akey, who is traveling over the United States with, his trick bear, "Queenie," in which he stated: "We are Working south and intend to show at Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas and many other southern states, after which we will go to South America. We expect to be back in Merrill in July, 1918."' The following clipping from the Nebraska City Daily News will be read with interest: "This noon the young and old witnessed a sight they never witnessed being a bear before in this city, that being a bear driving a car. The Petring Auto Co. have always claimed that anyone can drive a Ford and today, to demonstrate it, they gave one of their new Ford cars over to John Akey, of Merrill, Wis., who is here with his bear, 'Queen,' and with her at the wheel, they drove, the car all over the city. This afternoon a matinee, given at the Overland, and the house was packed, in which the `Queen,' appeared on roller skates, on a bike, wheeling a baby carriage, and did many other stunts. The children and older ones were more than delighted at the sight, and this evening another performance will be given. This bear is certainly a wonder and gives one of the finest exhibitions that was ever given by a bear." Clippings were also sent from Sioux City Iowa, Hiawatha, Kansas, and other places where the bear has performed and each one devoted much space to the praising of the trick bear. __________________________________ ADDS BEAR T0 COLLECTION LOCAL MENAGERIE BETTER THAN THAT CARRIED BY A CIRCUS. Merrill can boast of a better menagerie than most cites its size and it is owned by an individual. John Akey, who runs a saloon at the depot, has a black bear, a monkey, a porcupine, a fox, a coon, a wild cat, a deer and several ferrets running loose in his place of business. The black bear was only secured yesterday from Krueger & Miller at Doering and it caused no little commotion on the street car when it was being taken home. Several women screamed and a near panic ensued until they found that it was chained. Mr. Akey has always been a lover of wild animals and has had no little success in training them. It is a sight well worth going miles to see to step into Mr. Akey's place of business and have a deer nosing around in your pockets for something to eat and while you are feeding the deer to look over in a dark corner and see the bright eyes of a coon, staring out at one. A noise is heard in the back room and your hair fairly stands on end when out shuffles a big black bear. The "Porky" is an independent individual with whom one does not care to become too friendly, although Mr. Akey handles and fondles all of them with ease. All the animals look upon each other with a great deal of suspicion mixed with curiosity but so far they live in perfect peace in this Utopia of theirs. _______________________________ THE MERRILL DAILY HERALD QUEENIE VISITS CREAM CITY CALLS ON PRESIDENT OF PARK BOARD TO OFFER BIRTHDAY CONGRATULATIONS. A second bear is making Merrill famous. Instead of the slogan used by a Milwaukee brewery, "The Beer that Made Milwaukee Famous", John Akey with his "Queen", will now use the slogan "The Bear that Made Merrill Famous." The following sketch taken from a recent issue of the Milwaukee Free Press will be of interest to the residents of this city: "With her hair in a braid. Queenie was there. "However, she wasn't "all ready for bed in her nightly arrayed." In fact, she was dressed only in the covering vouched her by dame nature and a pair of roller skates. It happened like this: "It was the. sixty-second birthday of Henry Weber, president of the board. Queenie called to congratulate him. Whereby hangs a tale. "Queenie comes from Merrill, Wis. Some time ago, in infancy, to tell the truth - but Queenie is a lady, and the age of woman must never be mentioned - she came under the tuition of John Akey, and she learned many things. She can skate on ice or rollers. She can drive an automobile, drink from bottle, clamber over a stepladder, and, as R. R. Eunson her enthusiastic press agent, says, "do anything but talk." In fact, Queenie is possessed of, attributes well nigh human. Received With Open Arms. "Queenie came to Milwaukee some time ago. She decided that it was best that she make her headquarters at the Globe hotel. So she did. g, And then, feeling lonesome, she decided that it was incumbent upon her to visit the Milwaukee zoo. "Washington park received her with open arms. The Countess Heine greeted her, first of all. "By the way, my dear', said the countess, carelessly tossing a wisp of hay across her back as she spoke, are you aware that Tuesday is the birthday of Henry Weber?" " `Who is he?' queried Queenie for she came from the backwoods, and wasn't wise." " ` Henry Weber?' the countess snorted. Why he's the president of the park board. He's the friend of 'all the animals here. He's the man who puts the 'bear' in bear. He IS one.' " `Yup!' joined in the hippo. "He's the friend of all of us. We want to treat him right. Understand - right." " `Just so,' the polar bear broke in. "But we can't get away. These goldinged bars keep us here, and we're up against it. Will you be the representative of the zoo on his joyous and festive occasion?" "Queenie considered a moment. Then: " `I will,' she said; and she was. "Queenie went back to the Globe hotel, where she had registered, and pondered. Of course, she was aware that a perfect lady couldn't expect to meet a president of a park board on his sixty-second birthday without a proper introduction - even if she were a bear. Mrs. Grundy must be satisfied. So it was that she sought Ben Scherer, former fire and police commissioner, who is the individual in charge of the hostelry. "`Ben,' said Queenie. "I want to meet Henry Weber." " `You're on,' said Ben. "And then it happened. "Queenie was escorted to Weber & Stuber's cafe yesterday noon. Messrs. Scherer, Akey and Eunson acted as her escort. That she might be properly arrayed, they dressed her with her shoes and roller skates before they brought her in. "Henry Is a Bear." "And Queenie skated right through the crowd, and gave Mr. Weber the glad right mitt. "For the zoo animals had told her that he always greeted his visitors with open hand, and she knew him by it. "The hand was waiting. "Many friends gathered to congratulate Mr. Weber yesterday on his sixty-second birthday. Queenie remained at the cafe during the afternoon, consuming much pop, and assisting in the festivities. "And, when the night came, and the visitors, one by one, drifted away, she sought the seclusion of her room, and there penned the following: "Countess Heine, care of Milwaukee Zoo. Dear Countess: You're right. Henry is a bear. QUEENIE'. "And Queenie ought to know.? _____________________________ DAILY HERALD TRICK BEAR NOW MINNESOTA ANIMAL BELONGING TO JOHN AKEY HAS PERFORMED IN MANY CITIES SINCE LEAVING MERRILL The following clipping regarding "Queen", the trick bear, owned by John Akey, of this city, appeared in a paper at Crookston, Minn. The bear had just left Grand Forks, N. D., where it had performed and, had also visited numerous cities in Michigan, Illinois, North and South Dakota and Wisconsin, and has now returned to Minnesota, where more performances will be given: " `Queen', the roller skating bear, who startled Third street pedestrians yesterday by driving a Ford motor car down the street, will be the special attraction at the Metropolitan theater Monday night. "The bear is owned by John Akey of Merrill, Wis., who caught it over a year ago. `Queen' is about two years old and considered one of the greatest trick bears in the country. "Aside from driving an automobile alone, `Queen' is an excellent roller skater, a fine trapeze performer and a trick bicyclist." __________________________________ MERRILL DAILY HERALD OCTOBER 2, 1922 ______ QUEEN FATTENS IN WHEAT STATE ______ AKEY RETURNS AND HIMSELF ADDED 28 POUNDS OF STEAK BESIDES A POCKET ROLL _____ May Go to Europe ______ DOES NOT EXPECT TO TAKE A SHAKING THRONE BUT MAY LEAVE A STAMP OF DEMOCRACY ______ John Akey and his Queen bear have been treated royally in the past several months and just returned from a long itinerary begun last fall and which took them in turn to the Pacific coast, the Mexican border states including Texas, and then to Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota, Minnesota, and finally, Wisconsin. Akey left here weighing 160 pounds and on his return Saturday tipped the scales to the fine tune of 188. But fine as the West treated Akey, it was all the more generous to her feminine grace, Miss Queen, who before her departure weighed a skimpy 72 and who now is a plump and even 200. It's a long story and Akey was too busy receiving congratulations of his tour today to tell the details, but everywhere Queen billed, she was the Queen of the day with no other attractions tying with hers. During this tour of a round 24 states. Miss Queen increased in her feminine ambitions although Akey was not prone to tell us how much rouge she is using and with what skill she darkens her eye-brows, but he revealed sufficient of her wardrobe to inform us that she was the most elegantly dressed feminine bear that has ever mounted the stage. In her act, she undresses before her enthused audience, her garments showing a brilliant array of colors and including a $15 pair of shoes and equally costly corsets which she does not mind wearing provided they are not laced beyond comfortability. In this she follows the modern feminine rather than the feminine of a century ago. She then roller skates, boxes, wrestles, allows tiny kiddies to feed her tiny candy hearts by placing them between her teeth, and then she gives a boy a ride in a buggy and I at the unexpected time dumps him out. During the day Queen drives her car about the city streets and adds further to her reputation by entering school houses and piling dozens of the juveniles over and upon each other into a huge pile as fast as they can come and without raising a scratch or even injuring the feelings. Consequently she has added thousands of admirers and playmates to, her acquaintances and there isn't any need of a booking agent as Queen herself is the best recommendation anyone could demand. In fact, a few of the many letters of recommendation Queen has earned from opera house managers have caused stern managers to show an unusual turn of mind and book the act instantly. And, under contract, Queen demands a round $225 a week which is ample for Queen and Akey to transport themselves in becoming form, and allows for a tidy balance. The iron range country in Minnesota met with Akey's greatest interest and Queen herself found it even more wondrously rich than she had opined but there were regrets too, for at Hibbing, Queen lost her companion, the little wolf which Akey had trained and which just before its disappearance had played with a bull dog. Attached to the little wolf was a long chain and Akey is patiently awaiting the possible recovery of his pet and arranged for ample reward. Akey also owned a raccoon but the little coon died on the trip, another painfully felt loss. In ten days Akey expects to leave for the south and will go to Florida and other southern states for an extensive tour. In a year or so, Queen expects to go abroad but not for an education but as an educator and probabilities are that in her playful mood, she will pile princes and princesses upon each other, possibly wrecking future empires, or, the other hand, should the future allow the rule of a royalist, her good nature may in turn stamp an empire with her democracy. Such are Akey's hopes, and all that remains is that Queen shall not follow in the footsteps of Akey's raccoon, or of the tiny wolf and chain, which somewhere in the rich Minnesota range have broken away from their human engagement. _____________________________ HUNDREDS SEE BEAR DRIVE AUTO Hundreds of children, and grown-ups as well, saw "Queen", a trained bear owned by John Akey, of Merrill, Wis., drive a Ford touring car through the business district early this afternoon, the exhibition attracting children long before the scheduled time for the "stunt." The bear, 11 years old, is making a stage appearance at the Peru theater, and has appeared in many, cities in the United States and Canada. Akey said that while "Queen" has been arrested for speeding in Washington, D. C., and in Maryland, her driving in Peru was most careful. October 20, 1933 BEAR TRAINER HERE VICTIM OF PNEUMONIA John B. Akey, Owner of "Queenie," Educated Bear, Dies After Short Illness FUNERAL TO BE HELD MONDAY Resided In Merrill For Nearly Half a Century Achieved Wide Fame John B. Akey, one of the most colorful citizens in Merrill , for nearly half a century and who, in later years, achieved wide fame as the trainer of an educated bear, passed away in his home at 204 Fourth street at 8 o'clock this morning, death being due to pneumonia. Death claimed Mr. Akey, who was in his seventy-third year, after an illness of seven days. His passing was a signal for widespread grief on all sides for in his full life time Mr. Akey had created deep and lasting friendships with hundreds. As owner of the educated bear, "Queenie," Mr. Akey gained nation-wide notice as he took her on tours of exhibition all over the United States and into Canada. Queenie roller skated, wrestled, and drove automobiles and in other ways demonstrated her unusual training under direction of John Akey. Mr. Akey will long be remembered as the owner of Queenie to the thousands and thousands who stood idly by to be amused by antics of the bear. But in the memories of those who knew him as a friend, he will continue to live as a man who in every way was a gentleman and who commanded their respect and affection. His sense of humor was as well developed as Queenie was trained and was continually being manifested. When word got around that John Akey was seriously ill his friends could not but help to review some of his unusual characteristics. The latest story that will be told about John probably will be about his unwillingness to "give up." He had been working over at the city garage when he was taken ill. His friends remarked to him that he was not looking quite fit and that he ought to take a rest, but Mr. Akey turned from them: "Haven't got time to rest, now," he would say. He kept on the job until the illness had gripped him so completely that there was little chance for recovery. The bear is gone and so is John, but the stories of his part in the life of the city will be told and retold for many years to come. Mr. Akey was born at Theresa, this state, on October 22, 1860, and, on Sunday next, would have reached his 73rd birthday anniversary. He was the son of Joseph and Delina Akey, and came to this city about forty years ago, from Rudolph. The marriage of the deceased to Miss Cora Herrick, occurred on July 29, 1882, at Junction City, and on July 29, 1932, Mr. and Mrs. Akey celebrated their golden wedding, in this city, at which time there was a large gathering of his friends. Eight children came to bless this union, of whom two daughters have preceded their father in death: Mrs. George Hams, of Gleason, and Miss Leone Akey. The widow and six children survive, as follow: Mabel, now Mrs. James Sowers, of Antigo; Archie Akey, of this city; Eva, now Mrs. Arthur Clark of Mosinee; Cora, now Mrs. Frank Gentz of Blackwell; Lois, now Mrs. Albin Kujawa, of this city; and Esther, now Mrs. Rudolph Maggy, also of this city. One brother, George Akey, of Adams, and one sister, Mrs. L. Rayome, of Rudolph, also survive, besides twenty five grandchildren. Arthur Akey, Sr., and Richard R. Akey, of this city, are-nephews of the deceased. Mr. Akey had been a life long adherent, of the Catholic faith, and all during his residence here was a devout member of St. Francis Xavier church, from which edifice funeral services will be held on Monday morning, at 9:00 o'clock following brief services at the home, at 8:30 o'clock , with Rev. Father M. A. Prock, officiating. Interment will take place in St. Francis cemetery. Trained Bear May Be Seen at World's Fair "The late John Akey's bear, Queenie, says the Merrill Herald, "is expected to perform this summer for visitors at the Chicago Century of Progress exposition. "The bear, purchased by a Chicago amusement park owner and animal trainer, was shipped by express recently. "Since Mr. Akey's death last October Queenie has suffered for want of the exercise her master had given her daily, and the widow decided to dispose of the animal. "Mr. Akey and the bear became nationally famous over a period the last ten years as they toured the country for exhibitions. They visited every state in the country. "Queenie was regarded by her master as the only educated bear in captivity. In exhibitions Queenie, performed a repertoire of tricks her master had taught. One of the best acts was the bear on roller skates. "Mr. Akey captured the bear as a cub in the Newwood section about fourteen years ago. After their long association the bear was lonesome following her master's death, members of the family said. " Mrs. Akey is visiting at present at the home of her daughter, Mrs. James Sowers, in Antigo." Notes for CORA EDITH HERRICK: [Brøderbund WFT Vol. 1, Ed. 1, Tree #1963, Date of Import: Mar 23, 1996] Cora Edith Herrick from the Merrill Daily Herald 1932 Couple To Celebrate Golden Wedding The hand of Fate enters into and directs the lives of every member of the human race. With some fortunately, it deals more gently than with others. But of all the granted favors of this unseen mystery, probably there is none which brings greater or more lasting happiness than the continued companionship of those who are nearest and dearest, through marital relationship. Such has been the good fortune of Mr. and Mrs. John Akey, of this city, who are to celebrate their fiftieth or golden wedding anniversary, which occurs on Friday, July 29, 1932, but will be formally observed on Sunday, July 31, at the home their son, Archie Akey, 510 Eighth street, with a family dinner, followed by a reception to their friends at the same place, during the hours from 2:00 to 5:00 in the afternoon. Both Mr. and Mrs. Akey are Wisconsin born, Mr. Akey at Theresa and Mrs. Akey, at Oasis while, their marriage took place at Junction City, on July 29th, 1882. Mr. and Mrs. Akey have been residents of Merrill for more than forty years, residing continuously at their present location, 204 Fourth street, and during that time they have been blessed with the confidence and good fellowship of a wide circle of friends. During these years of connubial felicitations, they have become the parents of eight children, two of whom were removed by the hand of death: Leone, at the age of five, and Ila, the wife of George Hams, in 1923. Those permitted to contribute to the parental happiness, and who hope to participate in the festivities of this unusual occasion are: Mrs. Mabel Sowers, of Antigo, Archie Akey, of this city, Mrs. Eva Clark, of Mosinee, Mrs. Cora Gentz, of Blackwell, Mrs. Lois Kujawa, of Rudolph and Mrs. Esther Maggy, of Wittenberg; they are also blessed with the unusual number of twenty-four grandchildren. Until about 1918, Mr. Akey was engaged in various occupations, which he conscientiously discharged. At that time he fortunately captured a black cub bear, which, possessed of unusual intelligence, and under Mr. Akey's capable direction and training, became a noted and much traveled animal. This bear "Queenie," by name, accomplished the feats of not only wrestling, but roller skating, as well, enabling Mr. Akey to travel extensively since that time, giving exhibitions in the cities of nearly every state in the Union, and parts of Canada and Mexico. "Queenie"' also possesses the distinction of being the only bear in the world capable of intelligently driving an automobile among traffic. While Mr. Akey has been at home or abroad, Mrs. Akey has faithfully discharged the duties of wife and mother, and today is enjoying the reward which comes to those who serve the Lord and those whom they love. It will be the pleasure of the hosts of friends here and elsewhere to extend to this happy couple, not only the felicitations of the occasion, but heartiest wishes for many recurrences of this anniversary day, and the Daily Herald joins them and their friends in their every kindness of thought and deed.
