Adna Winslow Clift was a Revolutionary War Veteran who participated in the rolling of the rocks into and pulling the chain* across the Hudson River at West Point to keep the English fom going up the river. (from his diary)
*A great 60 ton chain, each link weighing 140 pounds. The chain had to be taken out of the river in the winter and put back in during the spring (from the American Heritage, June 1975 pg 8).
