1014. He married MARY JANE COOK 27 May 1867 in Cincinnati, Ohio, daughter of JEREMIAH COOK and MARY HARTMAN. Notes for G
EORGE B. RENO:
Several researchers and family tradition say that George B. Reno was a son of Jesse Lee Reno from an early marriage to Mary Beall of Kentucky in 1840. The story is that he wanted her to convert to Catholicism, and when she refused, he divorced her and had everything about the marriage hushed up. Living descendents of George B. Reno, including Mrs. James W. Nicas and Judith Phillips of Carson City, Nevada, learned this information from George's daughter, Mary Elizabeth Reno Hoffman, "Grandma Hoffman". The story most likely originated from the affidavit by Mary Jane Cook Reno, wife of George B. Reno, in her claim for a widow's pension dated March 21, 1923, in which she states: "I was married to George Reno alias George Jones on the 27th day of May 1867 by the Rev. G. Schmoll of Cincinnati, Ohio and that we lived together as man and wife until his death which occurred on the 28th day of January 1923. I further state that the reason why he used the name of George Jones was that his mother was divorced from Jesse Reno and was remarried to a Paul Jones, and the said George Reno lived with them and went by the name of George Jones. I further state that the said George Reno alias George Jones was never married until he married me and we were never divorced and that I am living in the city of Highwood, Lake County, Illinois."
[Steven Fancy research] It is unlikely that Mary Beall was married to Jesse Lee Reno, and more likely, Jesse Noggle Reno was the Jesse Reno mentioned in Mary Jane Cook's affidavit. In an investigation of the matter by Roger Reno and William F. McConnell (author of Remember Reno, the biography of Gen. Jesse Lee Reno), they note several reasons why Jesse Lee Reno is unlikely to be George's father: (1) At George's birth on May 24, 1841, Jesse would have been 17 years, 11 months old. Assuming no sex before marriage, the marriage could have occurred no later than August 24, 1840 when Jesse was 17. The consent of Jesse's parents, if not Mary Beall's, would have been required, and yet there is no record of a marriage. (2) To enter West Point in 1842, Jesse Lee and his father and the Congressman who appointed him all probably would have to have lied about his family status. (3) Jesse Lee Reno as a boy lived in Venango Co., Pennsylvania, whereas if Mary Beall lived in Posey Co., Indiana where George was born, how did they ever meet? More likely, Mary Beall was married first to Jesse Noggle Reno, who would have been 30 years old in 1841 when George B. Reno was born. George was born in Mt. Vernon, Indiana, in Posey County, where Jesse Noggle's father died in 1844. Jesse Noggle Reno's brothers were in Posey County for the 1850 and 1860 censuses, and although there are no definite records placing Jesse Noggle Reno in Posey County in 1840-1841, there is definately a Posey County connection for Jesse Noggle Reno. Therefore, I have listed Mary Beall as the first wife of Jesse Noggle Reno, and suggest that they divorced after George's birth in Posey County, Indiana and she then married Paul Jones and he married (in 1845 at the age of 34) Elizabeth Conway.
Steve Fancy has a copy of the complete pension file and military records for George B. Reno, which is more than 1-1/2" thick, containing numerous documents and affidavits from George, his wife Mary Jane Cook, some of his children, various doctors, and several neighbors. George was initially denied part of his pension because he could not provide written proof of his claims, but he later did receive a pension as did his widow after he died. The file contains a copy of a marriage certificate for George B. Reno to Mary Cook at Cincinnati dated May 27, 1867, and the names and birth dates of their children. In his affidavits, George says that he was born May 24, 1841 in Mt. Vernon, Indiana. He was a carpenter prior to enlisting in the union army at Cincinnati as a private in Company G of the 5th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry on December 12, 1961. He was honorably discharged from the military at Savannah, Georgia on December 27, 1864 after three years of service, and after leaving the army, lived in Cincinnati, Ohio; Adams County, Ohio; and Dayton, Kentucky between 1864 and 1911. His pension number was 346008. In 1911 he was living in Dayton, Campbell County, KY, and by 1923 was in Highwood, Lake County, Illinois where he died.
In his affidavit for a pension dated August 20, 1897, George claims that on Aug. 8, 1863 at Rienzi, Mississippi he was captured by the enemy in an attack on the rear guard and received a gun shot wound in the left leg. "At Bell Island, Virginia while a prisoner of war about January 1864, while endeavoring to procure rations which had been withheld by the guards, he received a severe injury of the head by a blow from the musket in the hands of a confederate guard. While at Memphis, TN of 1864 he contracted malarial fever and rhumatism. He says he contracted lung fever at Shiloh, TN in 1862. He says that he lived in Cincinnati until 1868, then Stouts, Adams Co., Ohio until the spring of 1885 when he moved to Dayton, KY.
      The 1880 Adams County, Ohio, census lists George B. Reno, 39 b. IN; Mary Jane, 29 b. PA; Dora B., 10 b. OH; Mildred A., 8 b. OH; John W., 6 b. OH; George W., 4 b. OH; and Edward L., 2 b. OH.
