| Our family heritage comes mainly from England, Scotland, Germany and France in at least two lineages. There may be ancestors who came from other European countries, but all of the lineages are still in research and their earliest records are from the early New England Colonies. The earliest arrivals came over and settled in New Jersey, Massachusetts, Virginia and North Carolina. Eventually they or their children migrated to the adjoining counties of Virginia and Kentucky. They settled in Washington, Lee, Buchanan, and Wise counties of Virginia and in Pike County of Kentucky. Originally, in Europe, some of these families were of high notability. They held titles such as Earl and Knight and Sheriff. These ancestors held large amounts of land and lived in great homes, some of which still stand. They were also people of responsibility in their tiles, managing entire districts, and calling up armed forces in defense of their King. As they had generations of children and settled in America they became farmers and businessmen, miners and tradesmen. We have ancestors who fought in the Revolutionary War and in the Civil War, as well as WW2. One ancestor became a Governor, one the founder of a town. Some were pioneers in their own right, settling virgin lands in the wilds of early Virginia and Kentucky. But no less significant were the family that settled in Pike County Kentucky and lived their lives there. They worked and supported their families in the early twentieth century and thru the Great Depression. They were industrious enough to survive those tough times and gave rise to the Belcher’s and Ratliff’s of Ferrell’s creek in Belcher, Kentucky. This webpage constitutes only a small portion of a family genealogy book completed in May 2009. |
