Sophia (1858-1920) was the 1st child of John McDonell and Alice Sergeant. She was born June 4, 1858in Robertsville, Palmerston Twp. On Oct. 3, 1883 she married Robert Kennedy in Hinchinbrooke, Ont. 6 of their 7 children were born in Palmerston Twp., Frontenac County. the last was born in Coppercliff, Ont. Sophia died Sept. 11, 1920 in Worthington, Ont. and is buried in Eyre Cemetery in Sudbury. Robert re-married to Minnie Sergeant (Sophia's 1st cousin). Robert died Sept. 1, 1939 and is buried with Minnie Sergeant in Crawford Cemetery, Dalhousie Twp., Lanark County. They had 8 children, 4 born in Elphin, 3 in New Liskeard, Ont., and the last one in Vancouver. Barbara 'Jean' McDonell - was the 9th and last child of Robert McDonell & Mary Sergeant. She was born March 17, 1908 in Oso Twp. On March 27, 1937 she married John 'Jack' Crawford in Montreal. They had 2 sons, William Robert (in this photo) and John David. Jean was the 1st in the McDonell family to take an interest in our ancestors. In 1982 she wrote the 'McDonell Saga' from which I obtained a great deal of information. Jean died Aug. 19, 1988 in Peterborough, Ontario. Jack died May 31, 1988. Alice was born Aug. 14, 1836. They are my great-great-grandparents.They lived in Palmerston Twp. and had 10 children. John died March 21, 1897 and Alice died Feb. 25, 1899. Harry McDonell - (my grandfather) was the 1st child of Robert McDonell and Mary Sergeant. He was born in Oso Twp., on Oct. 9, 1889. He married Edna May Kirkham on Nov. 27, 1918. Edna was the daughter of Isaac Kirkham and Tena Glenn. Harry and Edna lived in Oso Twp., on a farm between Zealand & Clarendon. They had 6 boys & 2 girls. Harry & Edna retired to Perth abt 1964 and Harry died on Aug. 12, 1966. Edna died March 2, 1983. Both are buried in Crawford Cemetery, Dalhousie Twp., Lanark County. - Joseph McDonell (138 KB)
Joseph (1867- ????) was the 7th child of John McDonell and Alice Sergeant, born in Robertsville, Palmerston Twp. Married 1894 to Minnie Kirkham at McDonald's Corners, Dalhousie Twp. They had 4 children. Minnie died in 1912 and is buried in Zealand, Oso Twp., Frontenac County. Alice 'Addie' McDonell was the 2nd child of Robert McDonell & Mary Sergeant. She was born March 23, 1891 in Oso Twp. She married John Rutherford on March 2, 1910. John was born April 13, 1881. Addie and John moved to Alberta and they had 1 daughter, Mary Gwendoline 'Edith' Rutherford. Edith was born April 12, 1911 and married James Johnstone on Sept. 5, 1942. Edith & James had a daughter, Doris Johnstone, who was born June 27, 1947. Doris married Roy McInnes. Addie McDonell died Dec. 11, 1975 & John Rutherford died in 1961. Daniel (1866-1933) was the 6th child of John McDonell and Alice Sergeant. Born Roberstville, Palmerston Twp., moved to Ely, Minnesota abt 1886 and then to Wittenberg, Wisconsin in 1895. Married 1895 to Ledah Philpott (widow of Henry Van Gilder). Ledah had 2 sons when she married Daniel. They had no children of their own. Gwendoline 'Gwen' McDonell was the 3rd child of Robert McDonell & Mary Sergeant. She was born April 4, 1893 in Oso Twp., Frontenac County. On Aug. 5, 1927 she married Jack Buchanan. They lived in Sedgewick, Alberta. On May 14, 1931 Gwen died during childbirth, and her baby died also. Gwen and Jack had no other children. It's not known what became of Jack after Gwen's death. Matilda (1864-1917) was the 5th child of John McDonell and Alice Sergeant. Married 1899 to John 'Jack' McKinnon. They had 7 daughters and 2 sons. After Matilda's death Jack married Helen Goodwin. Moved to Polk County, Minnesota, USA in 1881 following there sons, James and Daniel, who went in 1876 and 1878 respectively. Donald and Ellen had 11 children, all born in Palmerston Twp. He was married on Feb. 12, 1918 in Lavant, Lanark County, Ontario, to Mary 'Mamie' Ellen McKinnon. Mamie was born Aug. 17, 1890, a daughter of James McKinnon and Mary Sylvester. John & Mary had 6 children. John died Aug. 26, 1982 in Perth, Ontario, and Mamie died April 1, 1976 in Kingston, Ontario. She was the adopted daughter of Harry Sergeant and Jeannie McDougall. Robert and Mary were my great-grandparents. They lived in Oso Twp., Frontenac County, and had 9 children. Herbert McDonell - was the 5th child of Robert McDonell & Mary Sergeant. He was born June 3, 1897 in Oso Twp., Frontenac County, Ontario. He served in the 1st World War as a private (#862808) with the 4th Canadian Mounted Rifles, Central Ontario Regiment. He was killed in Action at age 21 on Aug. 26, 1918 in France. Mary was born Aug. 6, 1863 in Oso Twp. Her birth surname was 'Fisher', and I don't have any info on her birth parents. She was adopted by Harry Sergeant and Jeannie McDougall and they had no other children. Mary was married to Robert McDonell March 27, 1889. They were my great-grandparents. They had 9 children. Jessie 'Agnes' McDonell - was the 6th child of Robert McDonell & Mary Sergeant. She was born April 11, 1899 in Oso Twp., Frontenac County, Ontario. On July 11, 1932 she married David Wilfrid Snedden. John (1860-????) was the 3rd child of John McDonell and Alice Sergeant. He was born in Robertsville, Palmerston Twp. on Nov. 19, 1860. He moved to Ely Minnesota in 1885 (abt the same time as his brother Daniel) and became an American Citizen on July 12, 1898. John never married and family stories say he died in British Columbia. Daniel (1861-1940) son of Donald McDonald and Ellen Hannah. Left Palmerston Twp. in 1878 with his brother James for Minnesota. Married 1889 to Christena Lee (who's family went to Minnesota with Daniel and his brother James). Christena died Jan.1900 after the birth of twins Lee and Lindsay. Daniel and Christena had 5 children, one died at birth. The remaining 4 are in this photo. back l-r: Daniel McDonald, Earl James, Winifred, Annie McDougall (Daniel's 2nd wife). Joseph Autin 'Joe' MacDonell - was the 7th child of Robert McDonell and Mary Sergeant. He was born July 23, 1901 in Oso Twp., Frontenac County, Ontario. Joe was married 3 times; Joan Arnold in 1929, Pearl Moore (in this photo) on July 4, 1940, and Christina E. 'Tena' Balfour on Feb. 14, 1953. (Tena was a sister of Byrns MacDonell's wife, Emma Balfour). Tena was born March 24, 1912. Joe was divorced from his first 2 wives and had no children. His 3rd wife, Tena Balfour, had a son, Murray Balfour. Joe died on Aug. 19, 1975 in Kingston, Ontario, and Tena died March 27, 2004 in Perth, Ontario. Maggie (1860-1889) was the 2nd child of John McDonell and Alice Sergeant. On June 16, 1881 she married John 'Jack' Cosgrove Byrne at St. John's Roman Catholic Church in Perth, Ont. They had 2 sons. Maggie died Oct. 8, 1889 at age 29 and is buried in St. Bridget's Cemetery, Stanleyville, Lanark County, Ontario. Jack married 2 more times after Maggie's death but had no more children. Robert Byrne 'Byrns' MacDonell - was the 8th child of Robert McDonell and Mary Sergeant. He was born Feb. 23, 1904 in Oso Twp., Frontenac County, Ontario. After serving in the 2nd World War he married Emma May Balfour on Jan. 14, 1946. She was a sister of Joe MacDonell's wife Tena Balfour). Emma was born July 26, 1910. Byrns & Emma had 1 son, Johnnie, born June 18, 1953. Byrns died on Jan. 19, 1979 and Emma died June 12, 2004. Both are buried in Crawford Cemetery, Dalhousie Twp, Lanark County, Ontario. Notice that he spelled his name MacDonell.
