| My Gillespie family, Scots-Irish were in America from the mid to late 1700's, and in Coosa County, Alabama from about 1840. The Dashiell family left France for Scotland, where the original spelling, deChiel, became Da Shiell. Son James then came to America in 1654, with a land grant in Maryland. The internet has been my most frequently used tool. State Historical Societies, especially that of Maryland, have been helpful, as well as other libraries, reunions, etc. I've also been fortunate enough to have had access to some verbal history from elders in both families. |
