Date of last update: March 10 2004 - Yes, I'm back!!. I am Andy Datlen living near San Francisco, Northern California. I am a descendent of my Great-Great-Great Grandfather Johannes Dietlien, born around the year 1767 in Germany.Johannes had four sons and one daughter, Adam (who died within a year), Adam William, Joseph, Charlotte, and Robert. From Adam and Robert, the two major branches of the Datlen Family Tree were created. This new information was recently discovered at the Center for Kentish Studies in Maidstone, Kent, by Shaun Griffiths, my 4th cousin, who has created a new Web site where we can discuss these findings, share photos and other mementos. See Internet address below. The history of where the Datlen name originated from is becoming clearer. Original theories were that the Datlen ancestors were from the D'Atalen families, the Detlinges, or the Dettelings, being Old English or Saxon German names, of which a number of references can be found names on the Continent and in the South of England between 1066 and 1279 AD. However, research into Johannes' surname, Dietland, and the baptismal names of his children, Daitland, Datelan, Dedland, Dietland, and Dadling will shed more light on this. From early beginnings in the 1700's in Kent, UK, today there are Datlen's all over the world, primarily in the UK, Scotland, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Cyprus, Canada, and the United States. Anyone with information about Datlens, or anybody related to a Datlen, is invited to contact me with information at [email protected]. I am indebted to the following contributors: Robert Terry Datlen from Dover, UK, my 3rd cousin once removed,(died in 1970). Reginald Datlen, from Canterbury, Kent, UK, my 4th cousin. Hazel Datlen, from Alton, Hampshire, UK, my 4th cousin. Alexia Eve de Caires, from London, UK, my 4th cousin twice removed. Philip Rogers, from Canterbury, Kent, UK, my 4th cousin twice removed. Jennifer Patterson from Australia, wife of Robert Ashdown, my 4th cousin once removed. Mary Datlen from South Africa, my 1st cousin, wife of Ralph Suter. A very recent development is that I, Andy R. Datlen, am probably not a Datlen at all, but a descendent of an unknown Danish person. Read all about it in the book, in the chapter "A Skeleton in the Closet", or join me here in California to discuss the Datlen Family history over a glass of fine Chardonnay wine. I am retiring in May 2004, and one of my high priority projects is to bring the Datlen Family tree fully up-to-date.
