Got married at 22. Raised his brothers and sisters.
According to his daughter Maude, the correct spelling of the last name is McFee. She was very sure to tell you that is was not McAfee, but McFee. I have found it many ways.
Charley Lovel is listed as a black Servant living with James in 1900. census shows him to be 25 years old and born in May 1875.
James had to go to work as a young man for Lum Hamilton with his mother to raise his brothers and sisters. James and Mary worked for the Hamiltons after they were married , until they started raising a family. They lived in Loyston for a while, James worked in the Timber trade, Cutting trees in the fall and winter and sawmill and farm during the spring and summer. He also worked for or with Matthew Stooksbury cutting Chesnut trees for telephone poles and during the spring when the river was up they rafted them down the Clinch River to Chattanooga. He bought a farm near Maynardville, Tennessee about 1925 and then Mortgaged it to buy a Sawmill. James and one of his brother-in laws were working at James saw mill and had sawn enough lumber to sell the following week and James could make a loan payment on the saw mill. Sometime over the week end the brother-in-law took the lumber and sold it , causing James to default on the loan and loose a 100 acre farm in the Maynardville, Tenn area. The story was, that James looked for this brother-in-law for several days with a loaded pistol, but James wife talked him into giving up the pursuit of his brother-in-law. James spent most of his life as a farmer and working in the timber industry cutting,or sawing operation, and or working with someone else involved in this business. He moved from Loyston, when the T V A bought and started to build Norris Dam to another farm and worked as a share cropper and then bought a small farm from a family by the name of Pratt. He then accumulated more property around the original for a total of about 45 acres. Some property came from the Clark's, some from his son-in-law Henry Stooksbury and some from Pyles or Sharp.
