Cause of Death:<CAUS> Congestive heart failure
Pappy was born the same year, 1 911, that his oldest brother, Raymond,
died. How Raymond died was never real ly explained, although his death
was ruled as an accidental drowning. He was only 16 years old. In that
day, the first-born son was so important to a So uthern family. He got
the best of everything. If there was only one of some thing, it was
Raymond who got it. Whatever the first-born son said to do, af ter the
Father had approved it, went. There was no discussion. So, you see, it
was a huge tragedy for the Allison family to lose Raymond, especially
u nder such mysterious circumstances.
However, that same year, my grandfather, B urton, was born. One would
think that this could be seen as a blessing by th e family, in view of the
tragic loss of the eldest son. But, NO WAY, was Pap py's birth seen as a
blessing. Tennie, as his mother was called, was in her 40's and thought
that her childbearing years were over with. The next oldest child, a
daughter, was 11 years old. This daughter was Anna Mae Allison and she
and Charles Bryan Allison, another brother were Pappy's REAL parents.
Aunt Mae, (she was really MY great-aunt), as I remember her, was a
loud-voic ed, laughing person, but also very demanding. My cousin and I
loved to go ov er to her house when we were young and spend the night as
she always let us e at whatever we wanted and made us "divinity" candy.
She also used to work at a candy factory in Farmersville and she took us
over there and all of the ca ndy makers always gave us freshly made taffy
to eat.
Her husband, Bryan Sm ith, died when I was about 10 years old and Aunt Mae
never remarried. It was my grandfather, her "son", that she turned to
whenever she needed anything - - and I DO mean whenever!!! Late at night,
early in the morning, just 30 min utes after he had left her house --
WHENEVER!!!!
My grandfather never compla ined about taking care of Aunt Mae. Here is
one of the many reasons he never did:
When Pappy was 10 years old, Aunt Mae came into some extra money. She
was about 21 years old and I imagine she had a little left over from some
wo rk that she had done. Aunt Mae was a worker...she held done full time
jobs u ntil she was well into her 80's. This extra money was the huge
sum of 25 ce nts. Since this would have been about 1921, that WAS a huge
sum of money. A nd, she gave all of it to Pappy, her adored little
brother. This was more mo ney than Pappy had EVER seen in his entire life
and Mae had told him that he could spend it on ANYTHING he wanted to -
absolutely NO restrictions at all.
So, being a 10-year old kid, he spent the entire fortune on candy. There
wa s so much candy, that he had to carry it in a sack and he put the
entire load into his desk at school. A teacher asked him where he had
gotten so much ca ndy and he said, "My sister gave me the money." The
teacher did not believe him. She assumed that Pappy was lying and that
he had stolen the money and/o r the candy.
In 1921, being accused of lying and stealing was tantamount to rape or
murder in this day and age. Nothng as bad as that had EVER been leve led
against any decent person he knew -- especially not him, Burton,
himsel f!!! I can imagine the agony that poor little boy went through as
he was dra gged to the principal's office in front of all of his
schoolmates (all 10-15 of them)!!!
Of course, Aunt Mae was called in. And was SHE in a high fury!! ! The
VERY IDEA that anyone would accuse an ALLISON, much less her baby
BR OTHER, of anything so foul and disgusting as lying and stealing!!!!
She was gonna horsewhip someone!!! How DARE they!!! She let the school
know that an ything that an ALLISON said was pure, 100% gold! And
especially her little b rother would NEVER tell a lie!!! And as for the
other -- stealing -- well, you can just take that idea and bury it down
