Daniel Melvin was born 1708 in Isle of Skye, Inverness, Scotland, and died Bet. 1769 - 1801 in Bladen County, North Carolina. He married Jane Thomas on 1745, daughter of Francis Thomas, Jr. and Joan Wining.

Daniel Melvin was sent to the United States as a cabin boy on a ship when he was only ten years of age. His father had died and his mother remarried. He did not get along with his step father. His mother sent him to the United States to live with next of kin around 1717. The ship on which he was sailing was captured by Blackbeard the Pirate (William Teach) of Teachy, North Carolina. One night he and two others slipped overboard to escape on empty water casks and swam to shore in the Northern part of South Carolina. His friend, 'Bones' and he made it to shore, but, the third man drowned. Daniel Lived in Bladen County for a while, then moved to the mountains. He found the winters too harsh and moved back to Bladen County until his death.
