Notes for Henry Edwards: Henry lived with his wife at 11 Wynd Street, Barry. The couple had no children. Henry was a Master in the Merchant Navy on a ship called the S.S. Treverbyn (St. Ives). He died age 47 when the ship was torpedoed during the Second World War on October 21st 1941. His memorial is on the Tower hill Memorial, London. Panel 111. SS TREVERBYN A tanker laid down as the 'WAR MAPLE', launched as the 'WAR AIRMAN' and completed as the TREVERBYN in January 1920. She was owned by the 'Hain Steamship Company' of St Ives and was sent to the bottom by a torpedo from a German submarine, the U-82, on the 21 October 1941 in 51N 19W. U-82 A Type V11C U-boat laid down in the 'Bremen - Vegesack' yard of 'Bremer Vulcan' on the 15 May 1940 and commissioned on the 14 May 1941. She completed 3 patrols and served with the '3 Flottille (Training)' from the 14 May 1941 to the 31 August 1941 and with the '3 Flottille (Front boat)' from the 1 September 1941 to the 6 February 1942. Her successes were :- 9 ships sunk for a total of 53,049 tons and 1 ship damaged for a total of 1,999 tons. Sunk on the 6 February 1942 during an attack on convoy OS 18, in position 44.10N, 23.52W by depth charges from HMS Rochester and HMS Tamarisk. Casualties:- 45 (all hands) dead. Her Commander for the whole of her operational career was Kapitanleutnant Siegfried Rollmann. Kptlt SIEGFRIED ROLLMAN Born on the 13 September 1914 in Friedrichshafen, Lake Constance (Bodensee). Joined the U-Boat service 1934 and promoted to Kapitanleutnant (Lieutenant Commander) on the 1 January 1942, prior to this he had commanded U-82 in the rank of Oberleutnant (Lieutenant). He went down with his boat on the 6 February 1942, north of the Azores. Returning from 'Operation Drumbeat' (off the east coast of the US) an attack was carried out on an allied convoy during which U-82 was sunk. |
