Notes for Florence Lottie Rose Sheward:
Florence also known as Lottie, was born at 21 Riverside, Newport. She also lived at Honeysuckle Cottage, Christchurch Hill and Cot Farm, Newport. At the farm she helped her parents with various chores. One chore being delivering the milk with the horse and cart. The horse was named Polly. Lottie's next home was at number 7 Langstone Cottage, Christchurch. On some postcards addressed to Langstone Cottage the address is that of 'The Shop', Langstone. The cottage had the forge attached and a front room shop which Lottie ran. Lottie and her husband Harold remained at Langstone Cottage after her mother moved to Barry with her new husband, Tom Griffiths. Lottie, Harold and their daughter Peggie moved to number 1 Bishpool Terrace, (now 616 Chepstow Road) circa 1929. Lottie's sons Francis and Roger were born there. She kept chickens which she took with her, when she moved to a bungalow at Christchurch called 'Kula' in February 1953. ('Kula' means castle in Turkish). After buying some adjoining land Lottie had another bungalow built also naming that 'Kula' which she moved to in July 1966. Lottie then sold approximately one third of her land including the first 'Kula'. The original 'Kula' was renamed 'Hilltop' by its new occupants, Mr & Mrs Van Gass. The first 'Kula' had approximately three quarters of an acre of land. One third was an apple and plum orchard, one third was house and garden and the other third was cultivated. They grew produce such as tomatoes, runner beans, rhubarb, cabbage and lettuce, which they sold, together with the orchard produce, by advertising on an asbestos board, written on with chalk, hanging in the hedge by the front gate. Their chickens lived in old bus shells which were kept in the orchard. Lottie's last home was at Eastfield Road, Caerleon. She moved there in the January of 1990. Her son Roger lived across the road. Lottie and her family would holiday most years, enjoying places such as, St. Ives, Llangranog and Porthcawl. Lottie died at St. Woolos Hospital, Newport. She is buried with her husband, Harold at Christchurch Cemetery.
