NICHOLAS CALLAHAM, M. (son of Nicholas Callaham), b. 1736, or earlier (at least 16 years of age when listed as a Tithe in 1752) in Va.; d. after Jun 1797 (probably Lunenburg Co., Va.); m. Mary Greeni b. ca. 1731; d.

Mr. and Mrs. Callaham were residents of Albemarle Parish, Va., in 1753 when she was named a godparent for Keziah, daughter of Arthur Freeman, deceased, and his wife, Agnes.52 Later, they were in Cumberland Parish, Lunenburg Co., Va., as shown by land records and tithe lists. He was included in Hugh Lawson's Tithe List for Lunenburg County in 1752, and in other years between that date and 1783. In the latter year, his listing showed: 1 white above 21 years of age; a total of 9 whites; and no blacks. This would indicate that he could have had a family of eight children, or the "g whites" (one of which would have been Nicholas, Jr.) may have included male workers or kinsmen living with his family.

Land records of Lunenburg Co., Va., reflect the following concerning Nicholas Callaham, Jr.: 6 May 1765 - Nicholas Callaham, Jr., bought from David Garland 100 acres on branches of
Stony Creek, Co. of Lunenb being part of land patented by said Garland, bounded on

"Before the signing of these presents, I have delivered to my son-in-law, Jeremiah George, an inventory signed with my own hand and bearing even dates, from henceforth as his own property." Witnesses to the deed were John and Thomas Taylo .57

Witnesses to the deed were Willson (? William) Moore, Jeremiah George, Luke Taylor.58

Nicholas Callaham, Jr., may have resided in Lunenburg Co., Va., until his death. He was there in 1776, when his son, David, substituted for him in the military service.59 At the 8 Jun 1797 meeting of Court in Lunenburg County, a ruling was made: "For reasons appearing to the Court, Nicholas Callaham is exempted from the payment of taxes .... 60 This decision may have been reached because of his ill health, age, or financial condition. It is the last direct mention of Nicholas (lallaham, Jr., found by the compiler in Lunenburg County records, except that on 15 Oct 1810, J.P.Is of Pittsylvania Co., Va., were ordered to examine Anna Green, wife of James Green, and determine whether they sold land to Nicholas Callaham on 7 Sep 1785. By form, dated 4 May 1811, Ben Watkins and Joseph Marton furnished information that Anna, wife of James Green, had relinquished her right to Said land.61 (It is concluded that Nicholas Callaham, Jr., must have died between 8 Jun 1797 and 15 Oct 1810, and that title to the land in question was being checked.)
