Notes for Bert Davis:
Sometime during the early '30s, my grandfather, Bert, and my father, Frank "Dixie" Davis jointly invented a crow bomb. This was necessary becuase of the damage millions of crows were causing the farm land crops. They used these contraptions to kill thousands of crows, which they piled up on farm wagons and buried or burned them.Thereafter they continued their partnership in wholesale fishing.
They seined many inland lakes of Illinois, once making a record catch of 57 tons of fish, which was documented by the "March of Times" .
This was during the '40's.Is was quite an impressive catch for fresh water fishing.I remember that my sister and I were generally allowed to ice skate on the 18' thick ice.Being so thick, the ice allowed the fish trucks to drive out on the ice for loading. This was the first and only time that I ever saw this.Sometime later, the March of Times movie was shown at the local theaters in Havana, Il.My father and his crew shared equally in the profits of this catch, which I thought was pretty nice for them as it was during the war when things were pretty tough.
