Notes for Charles Bright Davis:
The following information was supplied by Lucille Davis from memory. Charles said that he was never sure what his middle name was(Bright or Bone). His mother said one and his father said the other. He met Dorothy Mayo while he was living in Los Angeles and working on a trolley.JKD
The 1900 Census list his occupation as farmer, Son of Mary, DOB-2-1883. Place of Birth as Tennessee.
The family bible lists three marriages: Lona Jeffers-Baileyton, Tn. 12-18-1907, Dorothy Mayo-Los Angeles, Calif., Julia B. Henry-Greensboro, Ala.
Dorothy Lane Davis of Baileyton, Tn. told me that Charles was called "Little One" because there was another Charles Davis in the neighborhood. She said that she was almost certain that his middle name was Bright, because there were Bright ancestors. Charles B. used to tell the story about he and his brother William going to buy livestock and they would stay with his sister, Molly Baxter and she would charge them for staying with her. He would laugh as he told the story. She was known in the family as a skinflint. (JKD 3-23-92).
Ann Archer told me that she and Helen were playing among some knotty pines and she fell and hurt her head on a knot. "Uncle Charlie" came to visit and playfully told her that she was trying to look pretty with the bandages on her head. (JKD 4-23-92)
Charles Bright Davis died of a coronary occlusion at 8:30 P.M., November 16, 1944. He was buried at the Newbern Cemetery, Newbern, Alabama. It was reported that he had lived in Newbern for 23 years. (Source: Certificate of Death, State of Alabama, File # 23588)
T.A. Walthall told Sam and I that C.B. and Dorothy are buried in the Newbern Cemetery in the Davis Plot which is located approximately 50 feet inside the Main Gate on the south side of cemetery. The graves are marked with concrete stones(full length rectangular stones) but have no writing on them. He said it was customary for the male to be buried on the right with the feet and face facing east and the female to be buried on the left. There is also buried in the same plot a baby. The baby is said to be Goat and Betty's which died of dysentery and is buried next to C.B. but closer to the fence on the south side of the plot. (JKD 12-27-92)
T.A. told us that Gramps was known as Bart by his friends in Newbern. He was a cattle farmer and was very prominent in Newbern. He also said that when Grandmother died of cancer, Gramps was very much distraught and his marriage to Julia Henry was a marriage of convenience so that someone could take care of his children. He said that one of the boys,(He thought Elmer) didn't like her(Julia) and left home.
I have copies of all the deeds to the Newbern property. After his death, all the children sold the farm in Newbern. There are some very nice photos of Gramps. We have one which was taken of the Lick Creek baseball team around 1890.
Charles "Bart" as he was known to his neighbors, was a cattle farmer and rancher south of Newbern, Alabama. He raised cattle and cotton.
