Notes for J
OSEPH A. BENNIGHT:
Anita Benight Weir had in her card file that Joseph was born 17 Jan 1768? in England and that he died before 1891. In the 1810 Tioga Co., NY census, town of Chemung: Joseph had 3 males under 10, 1 age 10-16, and himself (1 age 26-46); females - 2 under 10, 1 age 10-16, and wife (1 age 26-46).

Family tradition of some of the descendants has it that the Bennight/Benight family name was originally spelled Benoit and they were from the south of France and went to England, later moving to the United States.

History of Vigo Co., Indiana, 1891, says that there was a large increase of the population in 1817 and 1818 in Prairieton Twp., Vigo Co., Indiana and among those who came about that time was listed Joseph Benight. Also stated that a granddaughter, Eliza Ann Angel, was born in a house that stood where the Wabash River now runs on Section 6, and that this house belonged to her grandfather, Joseph Benight. Charles N. Benight's biography in this book says that he was a son of Joseph and Margaret (Rosson) Benight, who were of English descent and moved from New York to Prairieton Twp. in 1818. Their family consisted of twelve children.

Joseph entered land on March 18, 1837, in Vigo Co., Indiana. NW 1/4 of the NW 1/4 of Section 7 in Twp. 10 North of Range 10 West containing 36 acres and 32/100ths of an acre. Also SE 1/4 of the NE 1/4 of Practional Section 12 in Twp. 10 North of Range 7 West containing 40 acres.
