Peace Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends, Peace, Kansas, 1875 "Peace Monthly Meeting, now Sterling, the name having been changed 9th mo. 1881 to correspond with the change of name of the town in which it is located, was set up by Cottonwood Quarterly Meeting, 1st mo. 9th 1875. The 8th of the month the day directed that it should be set up, proving so stormy, a fierce blizzard raging all day, that it was thought best to adjourn over one day. On that day, the 9th, there were present, of the Quarterly Meeting's Committee, Sarah A. Hinshaw, wife of Andrew Hinshaw, of Emporia, and Jesse Wilmore, and the Meeting was organized at the residence of Wm. Q. Elliott on Lot 31 on 6th Street, in the then town of Peace, now Sterling, Rice County, Kansas. "Of the Charter Members, the names of the following occur to your committee: Clarkson and Deborah Taber, Hugh and Sarah J. Hanks, Wm. H. and Lizzie Hunt, John J. and Almeda M. Carey, Oliver and Miriam Jones, P.E. and Emma Hinshaw, Benj. F. Hinshaw, Hiram and Ruth Ann Blacklege, Wm. Q. and Rebecca J. Elliott. Of these five only are members of this Meeting at this writing, 9th month, 1st, 1897. Of the above Charter Members four (4) were from New York Yearly Meeting, eight (8) from Indiana and six (6) from Western. Total number of members at t time of setting up 129, present number 203. "The shell of the present meeting house was so far completed as to permit the holding of meetings in it during the year 1875, but was not seated until the following year." 9th mo. 1st 1897
