Joel was a Quaker who took up arms to fight against the South in the Civil War. He died in November of 1868 in Indian Territory as a Major in Custer's 7th U.S. Cavalry in an ambush attack on the winter camp of Peace Chief Black Kettle of the Southern Cheyenne tribe.
