Mary S. Haworth (daughter of Joel Haworth and Elizabeth Maxwell) was born December 02, 1813 in Jefferson County, Tennessee, and died February 23, 1902 in Sterling, Rice County, Kansas. She married Mark Elliott on August 27, 1835 in New Hope, Salem Monthly Meeting, Union County, Indiana, son of Exum Elliott and Catherine Lamb.

The 1880 U.S. Census of Sterling, Rice County, Kansas lists Mary H. Elliott, widow, living alone and "keeping house" at the age of 66 years.
By the year 1900 at the age of 86 she was still residing in her own home. Living with her were a nurse, Martha Hadlock, aged 59 years, and a boarder, Mattie Sharp, aged 14 years. She resided at the corner of Sixth & Monroe Street in Sterling.
Obituary from "The American Friend", 1902: "ELLIOTT - Second month 23d, 1902, Mary H. Elliott, aged 88 years. She was born in East Tennessee. Her parents Joel and Elizabeth Haworth, were noted anti-slavery Friends and emigrated to Indiana in 1818. She moved to Sterling, Kansas, in 1875, where she was very faithful in helping to establish Friends' meetings, often traveling many miles in covered wagons to reach the new settlements. For the last twelve years she was totally blind. For seven of these years she very seldom missed the Bible School and meeting, in both which she took an active part. For five of the last years of her life she was a helpless invalid from paralysis. 'Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord.' "
Mary Haworth Elliott lies at rest in Sterling Community Cemetery, the cemetery her son established, near the grave of her son, Wm. Q. Elliott. Her stone reads: Our Mother at rest Mary H. Elliott 1813-1902
