Lewis Cassius Elliott (b. May 02, 1855, d. May 24, 1860)
The grave of Lewis C. Elliott at West Grove Friends Cemetery, Center Twp., Wayne County, Indiana
Lewis Cassius Elliott (son of Mark Elliott and Mary S. Haworth) was born May 02, 1855 in Centre Township, Wayne County, Indiana, and died May 24, 1860 in Centre Township, Wayne County, Indiana.
Notes for Lewis Cassius Elliott: According to "Ancestry and Stories of an Elliott Family" complied by Saretta Elliott Warren, Wilmington, OH 1972-74, Lewis Cassius Elliott was seven years old when he died. He died of diphtheria "according to family records".
"The seventh and youngest child (of Mark & Mary Haworth Elliott) , Lewis D., died of diphtheria in Indiana at the age of seven years." ["A Standard History of Kansas and Kansans", written & compiled by William E. Connelley, 1918]
When I visited his grave I read the date of his death off his tombstone as 1860. The stone is very weathered. This would make him age 5 years at the time of his death. He lies at rest on the right side of his father, Mark Elliott, in West Grove Cemetery, an old Quaker burying ground located near Centerville, Indiana.
In the Abstract of Records of the Society of Friends in Indiana, Vol. 1, page 7, West Grove Monthly Meeting, there is a notation that James Cassius Elliott died 5-24-1860. This we believe is Lewis Cassius Elliott. Why this record shows his name as James is unknown.
Evidence that his death occurred before June 1860 comes from the 1860 U.S. census of Wayne County, Indiana, taken in June of 1860, which does not include his name in the household of his mother and siblings.
