1. JOHN¹ NICHOLS died 1598.

Notes for JOHN NICHOLS:
When John Nichols died in 1598 he left much property. He was very likely the John Nichols to whom Sir Walter Raleigh made large grants of land in 1587, and several of his sons were concerned in various colonial enterprises.

2. JOHN² NICHOLS II (JOHN¹)

Notes for JOHN NICHOLS II:
John Nichols II made a voyage to the West Indies in 1606 and wrote a book describing his travels, "An Houre Glasse of Indian Newes." At about 1619 he was living at Tavenstock, Devonshire near Wales.

3. RICHARD³ NICHOLS (JOHN², JOHN¹) was born in Glamorganshire Wales, and died 1674 in Reading, Massachusetts. He married ANNIS. She died 1692.

Notes for RICHARD NICHOLS:
Richard Nichols was in Ipswich in 1630 and was admitted as a Freeman there in 1638. He came from Glamorganshire, Wales. After a few years residence in Ipswich he moved to Reading, Massachusetts where both he and his wife, Annis, died.

4. JAMES⁴ NICHOLS (RICHARD³, JOHN², JOHN¹) was born July 25, 1658 in Ipswich,Massachusetts, and died January 12, 1744/45 in Reading, Massachusetts. He married MARY POOLE October 9, 1682, daughter of JONATHAN POOLE and JUDITH. She died July 18, 1711.

5. WILLIAM⁵ NICHOLS (JAMES⁴, RICHARD³, JOHN², JOHN¹) was born February 14, 1695/96. He married ABIGAIL KENDALL January 14, 1718/19 in Woburn,Massachusetts, daughter of SAMUEL KENDALL and MARY LOCKE. She was born March 3, 1696/97.

Notes for WILLIAM NICHOLS:
About 1740 William and Abigail moved to Holden, Massachusetts where he became one of the leading citizens. On the earliest tax list that has been preserved, William Nichols paid the highest tax in Holden; in 1741 he was on the committee to choose a minister; he was town treasurer; and his name heads the list of Deacons; to which office he was chosen in 1743. He held many other offices also. He was a tanner by trade.
