Notes for L
EVI NICHOLS:
The following is an excerpt from "The History of Alexandria and St Albans Township Licking County, Ohio", published by the Alexandria Community Council in 1952

Fourth of July

Previous to the Civil War there was only one holiday in the year given over solely to the expression of patriotic fervor. That was Independence Day or, as we usually call it, the Fourth of July. Naturally it was an event to be looked forward to, and many accounts of local celebrations, both hilarious and dignified, have come down to us from those years.

The celebration in Alexandria on July 4, 1842, has been described for us in a letter written at the time by Orrin Bryant to relatives in Massachusetts. He wrote:

"We had a very interesting celebration in Alexandria on the fourth. At eight o'clock our Sabbath school celebration commenced, procession of between 300 and 400 children was formed and marched to the Methodist Meetinghouse where short addresses were made to children, teachers, and parents; interspersed with singing by the juvenile class, after which refreshments were served round. The whole was an interesting scene. At half past ten o'clock our Literary Society, together with the citizens generally, formed procession and marched to the Presbyterian meetinghouse where we listened to a very appropriate and eloquent address by Professor Stevens together with singing by the choir.

"I had forgotten to say in its proper place that the flag was borne by Mr. Levi Nichols, a revolutionary soldier now over eighty years of age, yet as straight and as active as a lad of 16.

"After the exercises at the church were over we repaired to the dinner table which was neatly and elegantly furnished and in a neatly built bower two hundred feet long. Upwards of two hundred ladies and gentlemen were seated at it and partook of a sumptuous dinner. At the head of the table sat a Revolutionary soldier aged one hundred and three years, which was no small acquisition to the enjoyments of the day. The old as well as young joined in the festivities of the day. Our minister also took a part and all passed off harmoniously and in good order without any of the noise and turbulence which characterize the celebrations of rum drinking communities.

"The dinner was got up by the Literary Society, the avails of which was to be appropriated to their library.

The Levi Nichols mentioned in this letter was the father of Levi, Jr., and of Enos Nichols who lived for many years south of Alexandria. He is buried in the Garfield burying ground. The elder Nichols led the procession that went to the great Harrison mass meeting in Newark on the 4th of July 1840.

The aged Revolutionary soldier referred to was Jacob Martin of Johnstown who died there in 1845. He came to America as one of the Hessian troops but deserted and joined the American army. He settled on the "Peg Leg" place west of Johnstown where at the age of 95 years he set out an orchard and lived to eat the fruit of it. In 1840 he went to Newark in the Harrison procession, lodging overnight en route at the home of Mrs. N. F. Dawes (Fitch farm) east of Alexandria.

The bower erected for the celebration described in the letter stood in front of the Rev. Mr. Boutelle's house, just east of the old Congregational Church.
