Notes for T
HOMAS STEPHENS:
Thomas Stevens (Stephens) was born at Stonington, Connecticut December 14, 1678 (Town Records), and baptized in the Congregational Church February 18, 1693. He settled in Plainfield, Connecticut where he married May 26, 1702, Mary Hall, the third daughter of Stephen and Ruth Hall. She was born in Concord, Massachusetts, June 1, 1677 and died at Plainfield, Connecticut, May 30, 1719. Thomas Stevens (Stephens) married, second, Abigail Wine (Wynn, Wynne), March 14, 1719/20. She died at Canaan, Connecticut, January 10, 1770, aged 94.
Thomas Stevens was living in Plainfield June 28, 1741, and at Canaan, Connecticut, June 21, 1743 (deeds on record at Canaan), where he was made an inhabitant December 11, 1744. He died September 7, 1750, and was buried in the old cemetery, south of Canaan. The inscription on his gravestone is as follows (authority S. P. Stevens):

"Here lies the body of Thomas Stevens who died Sept. 7 1750 in the 72 year of his age,

All ye who dwell below the sun,
Prepare to die to judgment come,
Though here my body lies in dust,
Seven sons I had I went first.
And they all soon must follow me."

The Plainfield records at first gave the title "Junior" and , later, "Secundus," to this Thomas Stephens to distinguish him from his brother in law, Thomas Stevens who married Ruth, the eldest daughter of Stephen and Ruth Hall, and who formerly resided in Stow, Massachusetts. The following deed from the Voluntown, Connecticut Records shows the connection of Thomas, "Junior," with Henry Stephens/Stevens of Stonington, Connecticut.
