Descendants of Joseph Davis

      7. William2 Davis (Joseph1) was born 29 Oct 1848 in Burntwood Big, Tipperary, Ireland, and died 09 Dec 1916 in Brisbane, QLD, Australia. He married Mary Jane Tubman 04 Mar 1879 in Brisbane, Queenland, Australia, daughter of Matthew Tubman and Emily Wallace. She was born Abt. 1856 in Swanlinbar, Cavan, Ireland, and died 10 Aug 1940 in Brisbane, QLD, Australia.

William Davis was born in Burntwood Tipperary and the following information was found on this town as it will not appear on many maps.

The Townland of BURNTWOOD BIG has 292 acres. It is located in Tipperary, North Riding, Barony of Lower Ormond, Civil Parish of Modreeny, P.L. U. of Borrisokane. The Townland of BURNTWOOD LITTLE, 120 acres, is also located in the same Civil Parish of Modreeny.
The Parish of MODREENY is 3 miles S.S.E. from Burris-O'-Kane, on the road from Menagh to Parsons town. BORRISOKANE or Burris-O'-Kane (Buiros Ui Chein in Irish or 'O'Cein's Borough' in English) is a small town to the east of Lough Derg. It also gives its name to the parish, in the barony of Lower Ormond, County Tipperary. It can be found twelve miles from Roscrea, north of Nenagh on the main Nenagh to Portumna road. The land is primarily used for farming and there is extensive bogland. The population of the area is 850 (1996).

William Davis arrived in Australia in 1873 probably on the ship "Storm King" which landed on the 3rd of May but as it does not list place of birth I cannot confirm this though the timing is right. He therefore preceded his brother Joseph and was the first of the Davis family to come to Australia. Prior to arriving in Australia he served 7 1/4 years with the Royal Irish Constabulary joining in 1865 but as no RIC Constable was allowed to serve in his own county he was sent to Athboy County Meath. He met and married his wife in Australia and holidayed often at Redcliffe. He had suffered terribly from both Asthma through his life and varicose veins.
