Descendants of Robert Blackwood

Generation No. 2

      2. Robert2 Blackwood (Robert1)2,3 was born 1807 in Glasgow, Scotland3, and died 07 Sep 1896 in Shellharbour, NSW, Australia3. He married Priscilla McKinlay3 27 Oct 1826 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland3, daughter of John McKinlay and Christina Sneddon. She was born 20 Mar 1800 in Gorbals, Lanarkshire, Scotland3, and died 08 Aug 1890 in Jamberoo, NSW, Australia3.

Notes for Robert Blackwood:
The Family arrived in Australia from Glasgow on the 14th of March, 1855 when James was aboard the clipper "Nepaul" having paid a fare of 28.10 pounds. This would make them Free Settlers rather than assisted immigrants and the accompanying information lists that they could all read and write except for Priscilla who could read only.

Their religion is noted as Church of Scotland and whilst this was in those days a breakaway from the Church of England both Churches are today classed as Anglican. The voyage was uneventful and all arrived in good health.

Christina Blackwood married John Alexander McCubben in 1857 in Sydney and gave birth to a son John Blackwood in 1876 but no father was listed, this could be typical of records of this time as some registrars refused to list fathers name if he was not present so the child was listed as a Blackwood rather than a McCubben.

Obituary

It becomes our painful duty to chronicle the death of Mr. Robert Blackwood at the age of 91 years. The deceased gentleman came to this colony from Scotland some 40 years ago and settled at Shellharbor as a farmer, afterwards moving to Jamberoo. The deceased had been living with his son at Kiama as a confirmed invalid for some years past, finally passing away at his son's residence. The cause of death was senile decay. His remains were entered at the Jamberoo Cemetery (this is untrue as his remains are entered at the Kiama District Cemetery) yesterday, being followed to the grave by a large number of friends and relatives.

After her husbands death in 1882, Mary raised the family herself, the oldest being James at 14 (he subsequently did 4 years later from a drowning accident after being swept off rocks at Bass Point, Shellharbor. His body was never recovered.) and 4 months pregnant with Albert. They for awhile stayed on a leased farm at "Blackbutt" Shellharbor but eventually moved to Kiama where she earned money but keeping house and cleaning for a family that lived quite a distance away returning each day on foot. She was known to love singing and could be remembered singing each day and her favourite song was "Closer My God To Thee". She passes away in Coniston, NSW after she moved there to live with her daughter Margaret.
