Notes for Mary Joy Everard Davies: At this time I do not have any positive details on my sister. I know she attended a private girls school and one year at a "Finishing School" in Brussels. There was also a stretch at Battersa Polytechnic to learn shorthand. In the year prior to the War in 1939 she went on a tour that was customary for young ladies abroad. This included Malta where she attended Royal Navy Officers parties on the Aircraft Carrier,Ark Royal. I believe she also visited Egypt and Singapore where she further participated in the correct social circles. For the first two years of the War she was extremely sick being nursed back to health by Auntie Ger at Pine Grange Guest House, our residence after leaving Croydon. Mother was busy running the hotel and attending to my invalid father who being a very active man did not take kindly to his ailment. He made life very hard for my mother who had enough on her mind running a new enterprise under war time conditions. I have to admit on reflection that my conduct was below average for a teenager and I always seemed to be involved in some sort of mischief! In late 1942 Joy became involved with the reception of Canadian Air Crew who passed through the Royal Bath Hotel in Bournemouth on route to active airfields in Britian etc. Notes From PAF Program The Death Certificate was registered on the 4th, October 1971, in the District of Poole, Dorset and Sub-Dist. of Blanford. Cause of death is given as Anorexia Nervosa. In the early 40's Joy had gone through a similar illness which at that time hab been diagnosed as Pelegra, a wasting disease caused by eating rice which she had supposedly contacted whilst travelling in the Middle East in 1939. I remember that her weight went down to the 70 pounds level and severe bruising occured every time her skin was touched. Auntie Ger nursed her through this period. My opinion is that her first illness was miss diagnosed and was probably Anorexia. She was to regain her health and bear two sets of twins however that first bout must have exacted it's toll on her bodily resistances. Bob, her husband was present at the time of death which was at their home at Green Gates, Holt, Wimborne. Being 12 years younger than my sister with a War in progress we did not have a close relationship. The only periods when we spent time as a family were during summer holidays from 1934 to 1938 when Joy usually joined us with her best friend Rene Howard. I had a crush on Rene at that tender age! I recollect that Joy had a first class education. Firstly it was a well known boarding school followed by a course in Shorthand in either Pitmans or Sloanes in a business school. This was followed by attending a "Young Ladies Finishing School" in Brussels. Then came a kind od Debutant tour in 1938 where she visited such places as Gibraltor, Malta etc. attending Royal Navy functions and other social events. One such function was held aboard the Aircraft Carrier "Ark Royal" at Malta. During the War she obtained a job as Receptionist at the Royal Bath Hotel in Bournemouth. This establishment had been taken over by the R.C.A.F. as a reception centre for Aircrew arriving from Canada. It was here that she met her first love, a reargunner who was to lose his life in a Lancaster Bomber over Germany. It took her quite a time to get over the shock of this loss. At one point during the War she was living in Penge, near Croydon. it was during the period when the V-1 & V-2 Buzz Bombs were directed at London and a visit to her was an interesting though rather hadardous experience. When exactly she met Bob I can only guess. it must have been towards the end of the War. Bob was a Tank Comander in the El Amien campaign. He mentioned that his tank received a direct hit and caught fire. Whilst trying to make his exit I believe his working parts were subjected to a very hot enviroment which could explain the two sets of twins that he and my sister were to be blessed with! |

Notes for Robert Louis Boyd: Bob died on the night of the first Wednesday in September 1973. As far as I know Bob served as a tank comander in the North African Campaign and was to regularly attend the Elamin get togeathers after the war which were held in London. He was a reporter covering all the Society functions in London for the rich and famous for a few years after the war ended. After he married my sister Joy they were to relocate in Bournemouth where he opened a Bicycle Repair Shop which I dont think was much of a moneymaker. Bob was a very large man probably weighing close to three hundred pounds and like most large people he had a very jovial disposition. It took little arm twisting on my part to persuade him to join me at the local pub! By the time the twin boys were born in 1951 Bob's profession was that of Magazine & Newspaper Editor living at 22.Grove Road,Christchurch which is a suburb of Bouremouth. As his father was deep into the newspaper business I supose it was only logical that he would feel more at home in this area. I believe that A.J.Kerry was instrumental in Bob trying the bicycle business as that was a part of A.J,s career; he also might have provided some financial assistance. Bob was to die in the Victoria Hospital at Wimborne. His occupation at the time was that of Welfare and Safety Officer for the British Aircraft Corporation. Bob was born Jan i2,1917 at 22 North Street,Tranmere,Cheshire. Robert Boyd, the father is described as being a Lance Corporal in 4/1,Cheshire Field Company,R.E. (Wholesale Stationers Assistant) The latter probably refers to his civilian job. |
