Ancestors of Peter John Everard Davies

Generation No. 3

      4. Daniel Davies, born December 31, 1829 in Croesgwenllian,Llanwenog,Cardigan,Wales; died October 25, 1895 in Everton,Liverpool,England. He was the son of 8. Thomas Davies and 9. Elizabeth Davies. He married 5. Mary Jones Abt. 1858.

      5. Mary Jones, born August 27, 1836 in Pantllyn, Llanybydder,Carmarthen,Wales; died January 16, 1900 in 3 Wentworth St,Everton,Liverpool,Lancs,England. She was the daughter of 10. Owen Jones and 11. Hannah Davies.

Notes for Daniel Davies:
As yet I have been unable to track down the date and place where the marriage to Mary Jones took place. It would have been in the 1856-57 period but the Parish Records for Llanwenog have been mislaid for this particular event.
In the 1851 census for Llanwenog Daniel occupation is described as a farmworker and yet in the 1861 census in Liverpool he has established himself as a Linen Draper. This transition in trades over a 10 year period is a hard pill for me to swallow! Daniel appears to have always owned his own business and rapidly earned the title of Master Tailor.
According to my father there were a total of thirteen children in the family but only three were to reach adulthood which was probably due to the Cholera epidemic in that area. By 1881 Daniel had become an invalid and poor Mary Hannah was 27 years old before she was rescued from her chores by William Williams.
Both William Edwin and John Daniel graduated from Liverpool Co0llege ,William to become a surgeon in Rochdale and John D, to obtain his M.A.
at St.Johns,Cambridge in 1900. I have been able to obtain records of all scholastic achievements and prizes from Liverpool College.
AS a point of intrest there was a Daniel Davies c.Sept.8,1871 at St Peters Church.Liverpool whose parents were Daniel Davies & Mary. This could be one of the missing siblings who sucumbed to cholera?
There was also a John Daniel Davies bapt. Mar.20,1859 also at St Peters the parents again being Daniel and Mary Davies. As to whether the above two are connected to our family has yet to be proven.
According to the 1861 Census of 82 Great Homer St,Everton,St Peters Parish the following were present;
Daniel Davies. Head Age 33 Linen Draper Cardigan.
Mary Davies Wife Age 24 Cardigan.
Mary Hannah Dau. Age 2yrs. 3months. Liverpool.
John Davies Serv. Age 15 Cardigan.
Letitia Hughes Serv. Age 21 Housemaid Anglesea..

John Daniel Davies was accepted to St Johns College,Cambridge on October 5th
1893. Admission # 944. His personal tutor was a Dr McAllister,a pensioner.
J.D.D acquired his B.A.in 1896 and his M.A. in 1900. Strangely he was to graduate in Theology and for reasons as yet unknown deceided to follow the teaching profession.
Details on his admission papers indicate that he was a student of Liverpool College for five and a half years.

The 1861 census lists the following as living at 3 Wentworth Avenue,Everton.
Daniel Davies Head Age 51 Shirt maker Wales.
Mary " " Wife Age 44 " "
Mary H. " " Dau Age 22 unmarried Lanc.
William E. " Son Age 10 " ".
John Daniel Son Age 7 " ".
Albert B. " Son Age 4 " ".

Daniel has been described as a shirt maker, draper, outfitter and a master tailor in the various census reports since he moved to the Liverpool area.

More About Daniel Davies:
Christened: December 31, 1829, Llanwenog,Cardiganshire,Wales
Occupation: Bet. 1856 - 1892, Shirt maker to Master Tailor

Notes for Mary Jones:
Mary was christened Dec 21 1836 at Llanybyther. Some of the records place events in Cardiganshire and other sources state Carmarthenshire. This comes about because the counties up to the mid 80's shared some of their administative and religious duties in this area on the county border.
Mary was present in the household at 30 Heyworth Steet at the time of the 1891 census but at the time of her husband's death in 1895 it was her daughter who present. However this does not necessarily mean that she had passed away by this time as according to the Electorial Registers a Mary Davies is mentioned as being the occupier of the house and shop in 1898-1899. Upon further checking,no other reference was made to this address until 1904-5 when a person called Alfred Kershaw was listed as the occupier.
I will check for a death certificate in her name between 1899 and 1904. Also there might be a possibility that she moved to her married daughter's at Broad Oak Cottage in Winwick.
Refer to letter dated June 26 1995 from the City of Liverpool for conformation.

An extensive search of the Liverpool area failed to produce a death certificate for Mary so it might be possible that she returned to Llanwenog after her husbands death. when the1901 census is released it will be possible to check whether she boarded either with her daughter,Mary Hannah or her son,William Edwin.

Point of intrest; Pantllyn in Welsh means pond hollow.

The mystery of Mary,s death place apears to be solved and occured Janurary
16th,1900 at Llanfihangel-ar-Arth but for the life of me I cannot find the source!
Found the source! Keith Lewin,a genealogist I know in Wales was looking at the gravestones in Llanfihangel-ar-Arth Church and found two inscriptions
concerning our family. One was for Hannah wife of OwenJones(sadler) of Lwynceln-bach who died August 28th,1837,aged 21yrs and the other for Mary Davies(Jones) daughter of the above who died Janurary 16th,1900,aged 63yrs.
Now Mary must have left Liverpool after her husband's death in 1895 and moved back to live with relatives.
According to the death certificate Mary died in Liverpool at 3 Wentworth St and my father, john Daniel was present at the time of death. There is a Will to follow which may explain why her body was transported for burial to Wales.
Have still been unable to locate where Mary and Daniel were married and now will try some of the outlying parishes from Llanwenog.

More About Mary Jones:

Children of Daniel Davies and Mary Jones are:
  i.   Mary Hannah Davies, born January 11, 1859 in Everton,Liverpool,Lancs,England.; died Abt. 1937 in Leamington Spa, England; married Rev. William Williams December 28, 1886 in St Davids Church,Liverpool,Lancs; born November 15, 1860 in Llangeler,Carmarthenshire,Wales; died December 22, 1938 in Leamington Spa, England.
  Notes for Mary Hannah Davies:
I now have a Will at hand drawn up by Hannah's husband in 1936 where she is mentioned so we can conclude that she lived to be over 77yrs. Her date of death should now be easily established.
Mary Hannah was born Janurary 11th,1859 at 82 Great Homer Street,Everton
and the birth was registered on the 4th,feb.1859 at Everton.

Excerpts from Probate Register.
Williams Mary Hannah of 24 Beauchamp Avenue,Leamington Spa widow died December 22nd,1938.
Probate Birmingham to Hilda Mary Williams spinister and Olive Gwendoline Burton(wife of the Rev.
Arthur Pelham Burton clerk)
Effects Seven hundred and ninety six pounds, nineteen shillings and ten pence,

  Notes for Rev. William Williams:
William's place of residence at time of marriage is given as Llandovery and
occupation schoolmaster. His father carried the same name but is indicated as deceased in 1886. The father was a Land Surveyor by trade.
There was a David Williams as a witness to the marriage which would be fair to presume was his younger brother. Also present was a Ellen Eliza Owen probably a friend of Mary Hannah.
William's place of birth has definitely been established as:
c.Dec 11,1860 at Llangeler,Cmn. Parents:William Williams/Dinah.
William was educated at Durham University, receiving his Licentiate in
Theology in 1889 and his B.A. Degree in1896. In 1889 he became a Deacon and an Assistant Curate at St Thomas the Martyr,Up-Holland,Lancashire.
He became a priest in 1890. While he was there he and his wife had two children, both girls, and baptized by their father at his own Church.
As he was married in 1886 it is highly likely that there were earlier children but at the time of writing I have as yet to find them. All siblings now accounted for.
He died in 1937 having retired to 24 Beauchamp Avenue,Leamington Spa.
His executrix is named as Hilda Mary Williams[spinster] and executor the Reverend Arthur Pelham Burton.
Date of death was Dec 22nd,1938. Probate Birmingham March 6th,1939 to Hilda Mary Williams, spinister and Olive Gwendoline Burton ( wife of the Rev.
Arthur Pelham Burton) Effects-Seven hundred and ninety six pounds, nineteen
shillings & ten pence.
I have an office copy of William's Will which basically shares his money and property between his two daughters,Hilda Mary and Olive Gwendoline on condition that they ensure that his wife,Mary Hannah lacks for nothing for the remainder of her life.
The residence at 24 Beauchamp Avenue was only three blocks from the Town Hall practically in the city center making it a rather desirable property and also of considerable value.
The following is taken from Crockford's Clerical Directory 1930.

WILLIAMS, WILLIAM. ---- Univ. of Dur. L.Th. 1889, B.A. 1896. d 1889, p 1890
Liv. C. of Up-Holland 1889-92; Winwick 1892-1902; R. of Ashton-in-Makerfield, Dio. Liv. from 1902. (P, Earl of Derby; T.R.C. 575l;
Q.A.B. iol; Eccles. Comm, 20l; Fees 32l; Pew Rents 15l; e.o. 16l; Gross
Inc. 673l, Net 601l and Ho; Pop. 9579.) Surr. from 1907.
Ashton Rectory, Wigan.

So far proof of the parents of William are inconclusive. All I really know is taken from the marriage certificate of William and Mary Hannah Davies and this gives William Williams as the father(deceased] and the fact he was a Land
Surveyor. At the time of William;s on Dec.28,1886 he was a 26 year old bachelor/schoolmaster residing in Llandovery. The entries that I have deduced come from nearby Llangeller Parish and fit the circumstances extremely well.
The fact that a David Williams was a witness leads me to believe that he was the younger brother of William.

According to Excerpts from Probate Register.
Williams the Reverend William of 24 Beauchamp Avenue,Leamington Spa clerk died November 27th..
1937. Probate Birmingham to Hilda Mary Williams spinister and the Rev.Arthur Pelham Burton clerk.
Effects; One thousand four hundred and sixty six pounds, five shillings and six pence.

  More About Rev. William Williams:
Christened: December 11, 1860, Pantygwddil,Llangeler,Carm,Wales.
Occupation: 1886, Schoolmaster/Curate.

ii.   Owen Thomas Davies, born Abt. 1865 in Everton,Liverpool, England; died Unknown.
iii.   Emma Sophia Davies, born 1867 in Liverpool,England.
  Notes for Emma Sophia Davies:
It would appear that Emma was baptised at Llanwenog though born in Liverpool.

As Emma name failed to appear in 1871 census it must be that she died at a very young age. If time permits I will try to obtain a death certificate.

  More About Emma Sophia Davies:
Christened: July 31, 1867, Llanwenog,Cardiganshire,Wales

iv.   William Edwin Davies, born October 28, 1870 in Everton,Liverpool,England; died March 06, 1902 in Rochdale,Lancs,England; married Jane Forbes Brown April 24, 1901 in Tattenhall,Chester,England; born 1872.
  Notes for William Edwin Davies:
Residence at death of William as per death certificate was 1,Emma St,Castleton,Rochdale,Lancs. covered by 1891 census on:
Film#6098442
Film#6098441
Film#6098440
These will be available in the year 2001 unless ordered directly from the record office at a hefty price!
According to the Office of Population Census Surveys it revealed that an entry was made on March 31,1901 showing Edwin William Davies as the only
occupant of the residence. This indicates to me that Edwin must have married Jane Forbes after this date and prior to his death on March 6,1902.
There is one slight change as far as the address is concerned and that is the residence is called "Ashfield". At the moment I must conclude that this was the Emma St address till proved otherwise.
Refer letter dated July 4,1995 from OPCS.
There is also a Will in my files leaving his estate to his wife Jane Forbes and there is no indication of any child born to this though she may have been pregnant at the time of his death
Probate was sworn March 21st showing total effects went to Jane Forbes to the tune of Six hundred and eighty six pounds, twelve shillings & three pence. It was resworn in November 1902 to One thousand two hundred and twenty two pounds, ten shillings & ten pence..

Excerpts from Probate Register.
Davies Wu=illiam Edwin of Ashfield,Castleton,Rochdale, died March 6th,1902. Adminstration to
London March 21st to Jane Forbes Davies widow.
Effects; Six hundred and eighty six pounds, nineteen shillings and two pence.
Resworn November 1902 as One thousand two hundred and twenty two pounds, ten shillings and ten pence.

Marriage Notes for William Davies and Jane Brown:
Present at the marriage on April 24,1901 Edwin's brother,John Daniel Davies,
Lucy Hutchinson,Maud Smirthwaite and J.Smirthwaite.
It is intresting to note that the Rev. W. Williams conducted the service. This could have Edwin's brother in law or W.Williams Snr. who woud have been
Mary Hannah Davies's father in law. Allbeit it was definately a family job!

  2 v.   John Daniel Davies, born December 18, 1873 in Everton,Lancashire,England; died October 26, 1943 in Christchurch,Hampshire,England; married Winifred Everard August 07, 1915 in Croydon,Surrey,England.
vi.   Albert B Davies, born Abt. 1877 in Everton,Liverpool,Lancs,England.
  Notes for Albert B Davies:
Albert only appeared in one census so we must presume he died of cholera or some other ailment.
