Excerpt fom letter written by Randy Davis to Carrie Mixon on 6/4/2001 My wife, my dad and my mom and I got out this past Saturday and went Graveyard looking / hunting. I have lots of pictures but need to get them developed then scanned. Will forward to you when this is done. Iredell ===== We went to Iredell. After asking around some local Irdell folks we found a lady that ran the gas station that just happened to have a copy of "Bosque County, Texas Cemetery Records Vol II Bosque County Historical Commission" It was published in 1982. On Page 211 we found the reference to the Martin Cemetery with the following information: Martin, Rev. N.I. 7/6/1833-4/4/1897 Martins, L.D. & Wife 1827-1913/ 1835-1919 Martins, W.B. s/o NI & J Martin 12/15/1856-1/27/1875 Martin, Osker 9/15/1888-9/18/1888 Martin, I.R. 4/23/1898-4/23/1998 Prater, Wesley W. 4/22/1905-8/22/1905 Greer, inf son of T.J. & A.E. Greer B&D 8/20/1888 about 20 other graves marked but no names The lady we talked to at the gas station in Iredell ended up calling someone when I told here an old lady about 90 lived near the cemetery and it was on the old rocky road nw of Ordeal. In doing some calling around she found the old ladies name as Eulabee Word. Eulabee lived across the street and east of the property. She was gone so we went next door to a house and it turned out the next door neighbor was her son. Her son gave us directions to the cemetery and it was owned by his brother-in-law. The son said go on an look and if the brother-in-law showed up don't worry and tell him we had their permission. The location of the cemetery is two gates west of Eulabee's place on the north side of the road. The rocky road here is Bosque County Rd. 2440. There is no sign that says cemetery, need to work on that. We turned into the property and drove down through the private road till it ended. Then walked across an open field NW to the cemetery. It is in the woods. Someone has been trying to keep the place up, wonder who? Their is a 7 wire fence around the cemetery. Also, there is a rock wall built years ago about 2ft high inside the wire fence. Once inside you can see the graves. Needs some more clean up but someone is trying to do so. I did see the graves and took some pictures. I noticed the new footstones that were on Niles I. Martin and Lucian D. Martin's graves. There is a different date on the old grave headstone of N.I. Miles showed 7/6/1833-4/4/1897 the new footstone showed 7/6/1833-4/4/1894. I assume the new headstones, since they are confederate solider type were done by Bob Martin recently. Hico Cemetery =========== At the Hico Cemetery, east of town off Hwy 6, we found more a caretaker that happened to have a book that he used to reference the grave locations: "Hico (Hamilton County) Texas Cemetery Genealogical Reference" Write to Horace Griffits, Box 101322, Ft. Worth Tx 76185 Horace was the compiler. Don't know if the book is available but can check. Here's the Martins we found: In the First Martin Plot Area of definite related Martins: Martins, Almeda and Isaac - 1/7/1860-1/3/1944 and 3/5/1859-3/19/1939 Martin, Homer T. - Feb 12, 1890- Oct 19, 1918 Killed While Serving American Expeditionary Forces Martin, Dewey - No dates Martin, William J.- Sept. 9, 1855- Mar. 30, 1938 (This is my great grandfather William Joshua Martin) Martins, Ben I and Bonnie M. - 1896-no date and 1902-1975 Found another Martin Grave plot that I am not sure if related. Dates are similar and worth checking into: Martin, L.F. 1855-1938, Father Martin, Barlena M. 1877-1938, Mother Martin, Rosco 1895-1932 Son Martin, Bryon 1897-1911 Son Archer City Cemetery =============== We then went to the Archer City Cemetery, NW side of town off Hwy 79 and Hackberry Rd. In same area found my relatives graves, did not write born / died dates, was tired I guess. Have pictures and will update when they are developed.: Martin, Thomas Isaac (my Grandfather) Martin, Ora Ida (my Grandmother) Marler, Margaret Batteas (My Grandfathers grandmother on his mom's side, my GG Grandmother. Her maiden name was Lam(b)? She was later married to a Samuel Batteas. She had a write up in the Archer City paper I have a clip on that talks about her journey from Arkansas and the Indians. She lived close to 106 years old.) Batteas, Sam (My Grandfathers Uncle, brother of Sally Batteas) Martin, Sally Batteas (My Grandfathers Mother, My G Grandmother. Her maiden name was Batteas. She was wife to William Joshua Martin who was buried in Hico. She as born Sarah Elizabeth Batteas. Went buy the name of Sally. Note: Although Sally has a headstone here she was not buried here. She died while visiting family in Rotan Texas and is buried there. Since the headstone was a three way headstone ( Sally, Sam, and Maragret) I guess they figured they should fill it in). We also went to Only Texas where my Davis' are buried. When I get the pictures I will scan them and send them to you. Later, Randy
