1. SHERWOOD3 MARTIN (DAVID2, JOHN1) was born Abt. 1783 in South Carolina, and died Bef. March 08, 1852 in Rusk County, Texas. He married NANCY RAINEY Bef. 1821 in Kershaw Co., South Carolina, daughter of AARON RAINEY and ANN.

Notes for SHERWOOD MARTIN:

Sherwood and Nancy were on the Monroe County, Mississippi 1820 Census. There was a male 16-26

years of age in the household. This could be a cousin, Samuel. Sherwood's brother, William, might also

have been in the area according to an 1820 county tax list.

In 1830 Sherwood and his family were in Hardeman County, Tennessee. Eliza was born in Tennessee.

A Joseph Raneigh, Raney, family was living next to Sherwood's family.

By 1833 Sherwood's family was back in Mississippi. Nile was born in Mississippi in 1833. The family

was on the 1840 Census of Marshall County, Mississippi.

According to Daniel Martin's letter, Sherwood's wife died in Holly Springs, Marshall County,

Mississippi. Apparently, the young son mentioned in the 1840 Census also died before Sherwood

left for Rusk County, Texas. Sherwood, Lucian D., Eliza and her family apparently came to Texas

at the same time, coming to Texas between October 1847 and early 1849.

The 1850 Rusk County Census showed Sherwood in the household of James N. and Henrietta

Lewellen.

Sherwood moved to Rusk County, Texas after Nancy's death.

Sherwood is listed on the 1850 Census of Rusk County, Texas. His age is listed as 67 from North

Carolina.

was the Administrator of his estate. Isaac Hicks signed a bond insuring Lucian as administrator of

Notes for NANCY RAINEY:

Nancy Rainey Martin and her husband, Sherwood Martin, settled in Tallaloosa, a now extinct pioneer

town, about eight miles SW of the present Holly Springs in Marshall County, Mississippi. After Nancy's

death, Sherwood remarried and moved to Rusk County, Texas.

Notes for NILES I. MARTIN:

Niles was living with Almon A. Lockhart's family in 1850 in Marshall County, Mississippi.

Niles came to Texas prior to January 5, 1856, when he married Jermima Griffin in Rusk County, Texas.

Niles was in the Civil War with Lucian in Company I, 18th Texas Infantry.

Niles was found on the 1860 Census of Wood County, Texas. Apparently Niles and his family came

to Bosque County, Texas in 1869-70 with Lucian. On the 1870 Erath County Census he was listed as

a farmer. He was on the 1880 Census of Bosque County. He served as a Methodist preacher in Hico.

According to the Deed Records of Rusk County, Texas - (Book L., Page 648) - N. J. and Jermima

Martin sold 160 acers of land to John Allison. This land was part of the headright certificate issued to

William B. Andrews. The sale took place January 5, 1858.

Niles is buried in the Martin Cemetery 6 1/2 miles northwest of Iredell, Bosque County, Texas, near

where Lucian and Frances are buried.

Bob Martin located the grave sites of Niles and Lucian D. Martin in the Martin Cemetery on the old

Martin farm in Iredell. It was overgrown and he and others cleared the small cemetery, they have put

up a fence around it. Recently Bob put in for Civil War stones for Niles and Lucian D. Martin. Niles's

old stone is now broken, Bob repaired it but ie has since broken again. The Martin Cemetery is located

N. W. of Iredell on the Old Martin farm, now owned by Mr. Linch.

MCLEMORE HICKS June 15, 1864. He married (2) RUTHA ANN HICKS August 09, 1849 in Rusk County, Texas, daughter of ISAAC HICKS.

Notes for LUCIEN DECALB MARTIN:

Lucian his brother, Niles, and their brother-in-law, Peter Waller, were in the Civil War. They enlisted

in Co. I, 18th Texas Infantry.

Lucian was the Administrator of Sherwood's Estate. He was also the Administrator of William L. Hicks's

(Rutha's brother) Estate. William died in June 1862. Lucian married William's widow, Frances E.

McLemore Hicks. Frances had four daughters prior to her marriage to Lucian. She and Lucian had

four children after their marriage.

Lucian and his family moved to Bosque County, Texas about 1870. He bought land about 8 miles

northwest of Iredell, Texas. The Martin Cemetery is on his land. Lucian, his wife, Frances, Niles and his

son W. P. Martin are buried there.
