Hiram and Mariah Blackburn Payne's DAUGHTER, Minerva J. Payne married James Davenport Hill, and thus became a great-grandmother to my mother, Arvella Hill Davis.Hiram's and Mariah's SON, John Blackburn Payne was a great-grandfather to my father, Curtis Daniel Davis. THEREFORE, my mother and father shared a pair of Great-great-grandparents -- Hiram and Mariah Blackburn Payne. This means that my parents, Curtis and Arvella Hill Davis, were THIRD COUSINS. I am sure they NEVER KNEW this. [RCD - June 22, 2002]
James Davenport Hill was my granddaddy Eldridge William Hill's grandfather.
Minerva J. Payne was my grandmother Minnie Payne Davis's grandmother.
Disabled Civil War Veteran James Davenport Hill and his wife Minerva J. Payne Hill are both buried in the cemetery of Pleasant Valley Church at the intersection of Hale County Road 29 and Alabama Highway 25 near the Perry County line, not too far past Liberty Church.I filmed their markers in August 2002.Looking at the front of the church, their markers lie very near the right rear corner of the building.[RCD]
WHERE is Hiram F. Payne buried? His wife Mariah is at Pleasant Valley Church in Hale County, Did we miss his marker when Edwina and I visited there in August 2002 after Uncle Troy's funeral in Greensboro? [RCD Sept 5, 2002]
The will of Hiram Payne is found in Will Book A page 166, of the Probate Records of Perry County, Alabama. The Will names sons: John B., William Y., James M., Samuel W., Hiram B., and daughters, Nancy A. And Minerva as well as his DEAR BELOVED WIFE, MARIAH W. Payne.
The property included in the will, named, land, home, horses, cattle, hogs, furniture and slaves "Mahaly" and her child "Tabitha"

CHRONOLOGY OF HIRAM'S LIFE:
In 1825, when they both were about 18 years old, Hiram married Mariah Wells Blackburn in Perry County. In 1829, the record above says Hiram was granted a Land Patent in Perry County.[ Sometime between 1830 and 1832, Sumter County, AL was formed from Choctaw Indian lands. Were the Choctaws sent to western reservations??? RCD. SOURCE: Maps of Alabama counties in book in Genealogy room at Melbourne, FL Library ] In late 1832, or early 1833, when Hiram was 25 or 26years old, his father George & his family moved to Sumter Co., AL, & with the aid of other settlers, founded the town of Payneville in 1836. In 1837, Hiram Payne was issued three Land Patents in Sumter County, probably down where Payneville was formed. Hiram died at age 37 in 1844 (his will was filed and probated in Perry County--so sometime between 1837 and 1844, he must have moved back to Perry County...?). His wife Mariah did not die until 37 years later in 1891 at age 84 "near Warren's Store" and she is buried at Pleasant Valley Church in what used to be in Perry County but by then was in Hale County. I have not found evidence that she remarried.
