Notes for Roderic Alan Davis: Buried in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Brookfield, CT., considered one of the most beautiful in Brookfield. "Laurel Hill Cemetery, at Brookfield Iron Works, was set aside about 1845, possibly earlier, the ground being given by Mr Eli Ruggles, and he was the first person buried there. It is the most beautiful burying place in the town, a real "Campo Santo" or sacred mount. As originally laid out, a broad avenue extended from the base of the mount to the summit, bordered by evergreens. From the summit of the hilll an extensive view of hills, mountains and valleys greets the eye; at the rear, the cool green mountain casts its shadows at sunset over the peaceful scene and the quiet sleepers. At one time this mount was covered with a growth of mountain laurel, from which the spot derived its name. Laurel Hill is, inreality, a warm "sand dune" and was doubtless formed when this valley was covered by water. [More likely, left by retreating glaciers. RAD] ... At the very summit of the hill is buried Mrs Lucia Ruggles Holman-Tomlinson, one of the first missionaries to the Hawaiin Islands in 1819, and the first woman to circumnavigate the globe it is said." Hawley, op cit, p.239-240. Mother and Dad are buried a few steps from the famous missionary. (RAD) |
