Marriage Notes for John Hibbs and Mary Ellis: Janet H. Flener, a descendant of Elias Hibbs and Elizabeth Nichols, has a journal that was kept by her grandmother, Nellie Alice Stafford. The writing is faded but Janet has supplied me with this information from the family journal; Listed as children of John Hibbs and Mary Ellis 1. Hester b. 15 June 1820 2. George b. 01 April 1823 3. Tresa b. 05 July 182_ 4. Elias b. 1828 5. Salina b. 20 Aug 1831 d. 03 Aug 1833 6. Salina b. 16 Oct 1834 d. 24 Jan 1919 *Note In this journal entry all of the children are listed as the children of the above with no second wife listed.
Most of this information can also be found in the book; "Hibbs and Related Famlies" compiled and published by Cleon M. Hibbs, 1979 Clio, MI.
Missing from the above journal entry is the birth of Israel Hibbs. It is noted that Mary Ellis Hibbs died about 1838 in The Hibbs book, which then confuses itself by also saying that Israel (b. in March 1837) and Salina are the children of John Hibbs and a second wife J. M. Race. It would appear from birth dates that the second child named Salina is the child of Mary Ellis. The 1840 census bears out the fact that John Hibbs was unmarried in 1840. The Federal Census of Mt. Morris, Livingston, NY states 1 male under 5 (Israel), 1 male 15-20 (Elias), 1 male 40-50 (John), 1 female 5-10 (Salina) and 1 female 15-20 (Lousia/Reason/Theresa).
