Notes for Joshua Way: Ways from Wayne Co., IN to Iowa; ca 1837. Posted to http://genforum.genealogy.com/way/messages. ... a booklet "Cedar Brakes and Hamilton Prarie - Story of Four Pioneer Iowa Families" by W.E. Sanders, M.D.; 1958. Several men were coming into this area of Iowa - Stanford Doud, Horace Lyman, and Joshua Way. "The youngest of the three was Joshua Way, a spare, daring, hard-working man without formal education who had just rounded his twenty-first year. He was born in the wilderness of Wayne County, Indiana in 1822, only a few years after General William Henry Harrison had finally defeated the Shawnee on the Wabash. In company with his parents he had made his way to Van Buren County, Iowa, in 1837...Joshua was only fifteen when the family reached Iowa." There is further information on Joshua's adventures, but the only other family information I noticed was the mention of his marriage of Elois Doud, Stanford's oldest daughter. Later Joshua became the richest farmer in Jefferson Twp. In the chapter on the Doud's there was further information on these Ways: "Elois Doud was for a few short years the wife of Stanford's young freind, Joshua Way. She died about 1854, leaving three small daughters, Catherine, Lydia, Emily, and one son Asberry. From her home on the prarie they brought her and buried her beside her stepmother, more like sisters than parent and child. On an oak terrace on the banks of the Cedar, not far from the cabin homstead, still lie the white marble tombstones." "Catherine Way married Daniel Horn, a Civil War veteran. She died in Kansas about the time of the grasshopper scourge and left a young son, Asberry, named for his uncle. Lydia Way married George Wright. They had two sons who died in infance and two daughters, Josephine, who married Jake Pegeler and Emily Jane who married a Mr. Matthewson. Neither had children. Emily Way married Thomas Mann and to them were born eight children, seven of whom lived to maturity and married. The Manns were a prosperous family and in the early eighties they lived in a two story white frame house on the north side of the Cedar in Clay Township, about two miles from the Doud homestead. The family later moved to the neighborhood of Pella. None of this family seems to have lived in Liberty Township. Asberry Way never married but died of tuberculosis at the age of twenty-four after being mustered out of the army." |
