WILKES/DAWKINS FAMILY PAGEUpdated April 26, 2006 |
Welcome to the Wilkes/Dawkins Family Web Page! Our history begins with the three (3) original Wilkes children - Jerimah, Mattie and Pearl Wilkes. Their father was a white man and their mother a slave. The family was born and raised in Chester County, South Carolina. The Wilkes and Dawkins families are joined through the marriage of Mattie Wilkes to Alec (Alexander) Dawkins. The Dawkins family also originates from Chester County, South Carolina. However, Mattie and Alec raised their family in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, which has become the ancestral homestead. It is unknown as to when both families migrated to North Carolina, but it is believed that tobacco is what brought them both to Winston-Salem. During the past Memorial Day weekend, we held our most recent Family Reunion in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
