* The Safford's & The Howard's*

Updated October 3, 2006

Thomas Safford, the immigrant ancestor, arrived in America from England about 1631 and settled with his wife, Elizabeth Sutton and children in Ipswich, Essex, MA. The majority of the information provided herein has been taken from "The Ohio Valley Saffords", originally compiled in 1895 by Reginald Heber Smith and Sidney Methiot Culbertson, from the notes and researches of Judge William Harrison Safford and his son, William Edwin Safford. The Kisler Press, Denver, Colorado, 1932.

Mathew Howard was born in Wardour, Wiltshire, England. He migrated to Virginia and settled on the Severn River in Anne Arundel County, Maryland with his wife, Ann Hall and their children.

Thomas and Elizabeth Safford, and Mathew and Ann Howard, were the great, great, great, great, great grandparents of Katharine Kennedy Howard and James Merrill Safford, the union that joined the two families. Katharine Howard was first married to Benjamin R. Owen, and their son-in-law, Horace H. Lurton, was Justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1910-1914.
