I am attempting to locate descendants of the Daniel Belt Family of Flemingsburg, Kentucky regarding my Great Grandfather.
William O'Dea, b. 1840 in Clonmel, County Tipperary, Ireland, came to America in 1843 with his Mother, Mary Skeehan, widow of Shaunus O'Dea, and possibly an older sister. Mary Skeehan and the sister apparently died in Flemingsburg, Kentucky and were subsequently buried there. William O'Dea was taken in around 1845 by the Daniel Belt Family, raised and educated by them. The Belt Family possibly consisted of six daughters and maybe at least one son as a grandson of Daniel Belt, Jeff Belt, was/is
thought to live in the Saybrook, Illinois area. The married name of any of the daughters in unknown.
At the age of about 16 (cir. 1856) William O'Dea left Flemingsburg, Ky. with John Howe and subsequently settled in Gibson City, Illinois. He later enlisted in the Union Army, had his name changed from O'Dea to Day, fought in numerous engagements in the Civil War, returned to Gibson City where he married Martha Swan of the Paxton, Ill. area, became a land owner, fathered eight children and lived out his days until he died in 1937 at the age of ninety-seven.
If anyone has any knowledge of the Belt Family and how to get in touch with them I would greatly appreciate their effort. There is still a grand daughter in-law and a great grandson living in Gibson City, Illinois.
