Descendants of Jan Gevitson Van Dolson

Generation No. 1

1. JAN GEVITSON1 VAN DOLSON was born 1640-1649. He married GEVETEE KREY 1660-1669.

Notes for JAN GEVITSON VAN DOLSON:
Jan Gevitee de Vries, later known as Jan Gevitson Van Dolson. Family originally from Dolfsen or Dolson, a village near Zwolle in Overysell, Holland. Jan was born in Friesland and was distinguished as "Devries the Friesen" or "Frieslander". The child's pet name having clung to him in manhood. This family is one of the oldest in Manhatten, coming to New Amsterdam before 1648. In 1667 Jan built the first vessel of size. It was a merchant yacht for Captain Thomas Bradley.
Jan, Captain Dolson, married Gevitee Krey, the daughter of Teunis Krey (Grey) who had returned to New Amsterdam in 1658 where he had already lived for several years. He had gone to Europe to bring back his family. Jan Dolson and Gevitee Krey were married in 166?
They lived in New Amsterdam until the Dutch lost New York and then for a time in New England where their daughter Gevitee Dolson was born. Later returning to New Amsterdam and the adjoining town of Harlem.
Capt. Dolson was held in high esteem by fellow citizens. As proof it is
interesting to note: "Lubbart Gevitson who departed this life on November 21, 1673 and who held several public offices in town, being a chosen adelborst in 1663 and serving as overseer the year before he died" chose Capt. Dolson as guardian of his children's inheritance.
Capt. Dolson appears on the tax list of February 14, 1682 and in 1683. He, with Johannes Vermilye and Jan Dyckman (Dyckman House, New York), and others paid a total of 608 guilders for the estate of Thomas Hedding. Capt. Dolson's son, Teunis, received the appointment of Constable September 27, 1697. Teunis is credited with being the first male child born in this city (New York) after it was ceded to the English by the Dutch.

Children of JAN VAN DOLSON and GEVETEE KREY are:

2. i.   TEUNIS2 DOLSON, b. 1664; d. August 20, 1766.

  ii.   GIVITEE DOLSON, b. 1667; m. JAN KIERSEN, 1685.

  Notes for GIVITEE DOLSON:
Jan Gevitson Van Dolson and his son-in-law, Jan Kierson, got a lease of the "Great MaizeLand", an Indian clearing not far from Fort Washington, on March 30, 1686. These lands were laid out and allotted in 1691 and on July 2, 1694 Kierson bought for 100 guilders in money lots nos. 16 and 18 from Thomas Tourner as purchased from Holmes and Waldron - Drawers.
In March, 1691 Kierson obtained the signature of every inhabitant of the town to a paper granting him a half of margin of the land from the common woods, that Samuel Waldron had drawn out of the common woods of which half margin of land Kierson may build upon, there on setting a house, barn and garden. For which he promised to let lie a margin of the NE hook of aforesaid lot, leaving a suitable road or Kingsway, between his house and the lot of Samuel Waldron.
Kierson built his house and on March 7, 1700 the town officers gave him a deed. Here Kierson and his wife, Gevitee Dolson lived. This was the first settlement on the now well known Jumel Homestead and believed to be the first spot permanently occupied on these heights.

  iii.   ANNETJIE DOLSON, b. 1669; m. JOHANNES WALDRON, 1690.

  Notes for ANNETJIE DOLSON:
In 1690 Johannes Waldron, son of Resolved Waldron, married Annetejie Dolson, daughter of Capt. Jan Dolson.
To begin housekeeping, Johannes Waldron bought from his brother, Samuel Waldron, the new house the latter had just completed west of the road. This modest house was just north of 133rd street. Johannes Waldron added to this property by purchasing more ground from the town running back to the hills. From this fact he and his wife became known as the "Waldrons of the hills" In 1748 they sold their land to their son-in-law for 400 pounds.
