Notes for Mary (Polly) Ana Brown: At age 104, Polly Ann Chadwick, of Waco, Texas, is one of the southwest most interesting people. She was born in South Carolina in 1818. When she entertained a visitor who called at her home for an interview in August 1920, the old lady appeared to be in perfect health. She stood erect, walked with apparent ease, and was highly entertaining in talking of her long life. On a table in Mrs. Chadwick's room was a partly used package of Thedford's Black-Draught, of which she directed the visitor's attention. and remarked that she had taken a dose just the night before. After authorizing publication of the statement printed below, Mrs. Chadwick walked out into the yard and posed for the photograph from which the picture shown herewith was made. Nearly a year later, on July 24, 1921, a letter was received from Mrs. Nanie Frost, indicating that Mrs. Chadwick still enjoyed good health. Mrs. Frost wrote: " Mother is doing fine, She is still able to be up and seems to be in perfect health. She can walk a block at a time. She very often goes across the street to her neighbors. She stays at the house by herself while I work. I Come home at noon and fix her dinner. She never misses a meal. She is real heart, can eat most anything she wants and it never hurts her. I think she owes her good health to Thedford's Black-Draught. She hasn't taken any other medicine for 20 years. She will be 104 years old if she lives to see the 27th of May, 1922. I always give her a birthday party. She always has a good time. On Dec 26, 1921, Mrs. Chadwick sent Christmas greetings to the visitor to whom in 1920 she had given the beneath statement. "Mrs. Chadwick says" I was born in South Carolina. I was 102 years old, May 27, 1920. I am thankful to say I can still get around the house, so stay alone while my daughter works. I love to have people come to see me. I enjoy company more than ever before. I have to take medicine now for constipation, and haven't found anything better than Thedford's Black-Draught for the liver and bowels. My daughter gave me a dose last night. I have found medicine that tastes better, but none that can take the place of Black-Draught. It doe me a lot of good. I am glad to recommend it, for I have used it some time.
The above statement and story was taken from an interview in "The Ladies Birthday Almanac". The advertisement was in the December 1923 issue. In 2000, I (Bobby) contacted the Farmers Almanac and spoke with the Editor who gladly supplied me a copy of this article. The article will be posted on my web site at a latter date.
My family have told me that Edwin and Polly Ann raised the children of John Marion and Harit Dean, They are James Washington, Thomas Franklin, and William.
In 1999, I contacted a lady in Waco who is a descendant of Polly Ana. I will post her info later. She has stated that she knows the grave where Edmond and Polly Ann are buried.
According to Wynell Tate Davis (www.geocities.com/HotSprings/Oasis/5279/geneaology6.hml.) Wynell1@thevision..net (As of December 11, 2003 I have not been able to contact her through email or website. Ms. Davis states that it is believed that Pollyanna (Mary Ann Brown) was a full blooded American Indian. Believed to be the Chickahominy tribe, later known as Powhatan or Powhatan=Cherokee Nation. It is stated that she had 6 children.
In the 1910 census of McLennan County, Polly is living with her daughter's Reginey (Dit) Chadwick (age 55) and Nannie Chadwick Frost (Age 52). They are listed as living on Hackberry Street in Waco, TX. Polly (Mary) states that she was a widow and had given birth to eight children with only 4 still alive (they were Jake, Abe, Nannie and Regina). The others would be Harrit, Sarah Jane, and two others I cant not find.
Vendita Beth Chadwick McNeil (daughter of W. L. Chadwick, grandson of Ed and Polly) states that her daddy helped his dad (Abe Chadwick) bury Polly at Whitehall Cemetery. The sexton, Mr. Lindsey, met Melinda and her son, Darrell (a funeral director in Waco, TX) met with us. Venita told them she remembers where her dad showed her that he and Grandpa Abe had buried Polly. Beneath a tree in the middle of the cemetery near some Chambers graves beside a rod-iron fenced area next to her daughers (Reginey - DIT). There are two adult unmarked graves at this site that the sexton said could be the ones that we have been searching for. Mr. Lindsey also said he thought he remembered some Sutherlands buried in Whitehall. Venita said that she remembered her daddy said that Polly died in the mid to late 1920's. Many family members say that she was 105 years old when she died. If the Almanac article says she is 104 in 1923, the her burial would have been 1925 or 25 and her birth date would have be 1918, 1919.
Note: A copy of Melinda's Grandpa, Abe's death certificate stats that Edward was born in NC and that Polly Ann was born in Kentucky.
Melinda Simpson also provided that in the 1910 Census McLennan Co, TX that Jake CHadwick age 49 and his family living in Wise, Co, TX, Abe age 44 and Florence (Keith) age 25, in Wise Co as having been married for 5 years (1905) and she had given birth to 3 children and only two living. One would be Bobby Chadwick who died before he was 2 yrs old. Listed Sybil 12, Geneva 9, Pauline, 2 and Edward 3 1/2.
On the 1900 Census for McLennen County, TX, Polly is shown as having birthed 6 children with 4 living, married to Ed for 58 years. Probably, by the information given, Naney Chadwick Frost (daughter) or Billy (20 yr. old grandson of Ed) gave the enumerator the information. Then on the 1910 census, Mary A. Chadwick, widow is shown with Nannie Frost (daughter) in the household of Elias Sutherland (his mother-in-law) with his wife Reginey (known as Aunt Dit).
NOTE: In the 1910 Census, Polly States that she had given birth to 8 children.

Chadwick on the 1900 Census for TX in McLennan Co. Moody, TX. He is listed as born in Jan, 1820 in GA (parents born in SC) as 80 years old, married 58 years. His wife Polly A. is listed as 78 years (should be 82 years), born in SC, married 58 years. That would put their marriage in 1842 (not 1858 as reported by Wynell). Their daughter Nannie Frost and grandson Billy Frost are listed with them. And Polly is listed as having given birth to 6 children (4 still living). Grandpa Abe is not listed in this TX Census, but his brother Jake (John F) is listed in Moody, TX. Abe must have been in GA still. His daughter Geneva was born in TX in 1902. So Abe & 1st wife (Florence Gray) must have come to Texas about 1901.On the 1910 Census, Polly (Mary A.) is listed as a widow living with her daughter and son-in-law Elias C. & Reginey Sutherland in Waco, TX, and daughter Nannie Frost. Abe & our Granny are listed in Wise Co. TX and his brother Jake's family is in Wise Co. also. Mother's birth certificate shows her born in Denton Co. TX in 1916. I haven't found the 1920 Census yet.Bobby, since the 1900 census shows Polly having birthed 6 children, 4 still living, this accounts for us not knowing about your ggrandmother Hariet Chadwick Dean. Have you found any birth or death records for her or even the other deceased sibling? I would love to have copies. Do you know where Ed or Rev. Abe lived in 1850 or 1860. Maybe I can find them on a census record, if I knew what state and county to start in. Keep in touch.Melinda
