|
Notes for NANCY JANE SMOOT: Nancy went to Faber, Nelson County, VA, to visit her daughter, Elizabeth and son-in-law, Joe Whitten; was caught in a blizzard, contracted pheumonia, and died there. The kindred was unable to get through soon enough to the family, and she was buried there without the family's knowledge. Promise was to have the body transferred to Mt. Pleasant Church, but that was never done (source: family history notes). |

Notes for HENRY TALLEY WRIGHT: Born 1817 in Hanover County, VA, he relocated by 1840 to Amherst County (Conflicting notes indicate his parents died about 1830 in Hanover Co., but this seems unlikely). Apprenticed to a carpenter as a young man, and listed as "carpenter" on 1850 census. The 1850 Amherst Co. Federal Census only lists 4 children: John T., Lucy A., William H., and George W. Their ages at that time were 7, 5, 4 and 2, respectively. Benjamin, et al came later. A deed of trust dated 5/23/1855 in Amherst County (D.B. CC/506, courtesy of Robert Grant), defines 70 acres of land used by H.T. Wright to secure a debt owed to Elijah Fletcher ($384.30). H.T. Wright's property is described as: "lies on both sides of Huff Creek, and on both sides of the road leading from Pedlar Mills to Amherst Courthouse; and is about 3 1/2 miles of Amherst Court House,...." The deed of trust having been satisfied, on October 27, 1862, Henry and Nancy Wright convey (sell?) the aforementioned property to Lucy F. Smoot (mother of Nancy) and her children (her husband and Nancy's father, George W. Smoot is only referred to in this deed) (This deed information furnished by Robert Grant). He was a member of the Masons, and is listed on the rolls of the Clinton Lodge in the years 1849-1869. He served as Steward from 1849-1854. He is also listed on the rolls of Fancy Hill Lodge from 1885-1887. According to family notes, at the time of his death in 1914, he was the "oldest living Mason in Amherst County." Henry Talley Wright fought in the Civil War with "The Old Men and The Boys." He was a guard at a bridge over the James River near Lynchburg. Old family notes indicate he was wounded in the knee by a "minnie ball," and had to use crutches. Henry died at the home of his son, Thomas J. Wright, in Nelson County, VA on 3/28/1914. (FD note): I visited Amherst, and Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church (established 1840) on Febuary 22, 2000, and found only the grave of HTW. On his headstone was inscribed: H. T. WRIGHT 2-27-1817 3-28-1914 "IN THEE O LORD HAVE I PUT MY TRUST" |
