The WRIGHT family of Hanover, and Amherst Counties, Virginia

Updated May 28, 2007

Our ancestors of early Hanover and Amherst Counties, Virginia were: JOHN JAMES WRIGHT, born in 1842 Amherst County; his father, HENRY TALLEY WRIGHT, b 1817 in Hanover County (one of six children--but no evidence yet); his father, who is believed to have been WILLIAM (Thompson?) WRIGHT, b. ca. 1785, and his wife, believed to be a Miss TALLEY (based on son Henry's middle name). Have found no TALLEY linkage, so this is still guessing. Also have discovered that there was a preacher named Henry TALLEY in St Paul's Parish in Hanover Co. before and after the time of HTW's birth, so our Henry Talley Wright mag have been named for this preacher. Before William there is "said" to have been a LAFAYETTE WRIGHT who may have been a stowaway on a boat from England, but I have found nothing to support him at all. I have found evidence of William in an 1841 Amherst County Deed of Trust where the parties are Henry T., and William, and wife, Elizabeth--this Deed suggests a son-parent relationship, but doesn't assure me of William or Elizabeth being Henry's parents. A note from a long deceased relative who did early research, indicated that HTW was orphaned at age 13, but "William's" presence in the 1841 DOT has caused me to doubt that--but, maybe we should explore that route as well. Another issue is: If HTW was born in Hanover, what drew him to Amherst? There are at least two other Wright families in early Amherst--but there doesn't "seem" to be a connection. Our quest is to find more information on our earliest ancestors, and to help provide linkage for those of you who have found your roots within our family. Because crucial records were destroyed in Hanover County during the Civil War, information on William Wright and his parents is a major challenge. Early surnames include: ALLEN; BALDOCK; BEAHM; CARROW; DAVIS; DAWSON; DODD; GUTHRIE; HAMILTON; MEADOR; PADGETT; PETERS; RHODES/RODES; SMOOT; STINNETT; TALLEY/TALLY, and WHITTEN.
Also researching surnames: DEAN; DEANE; PACE; COX; WILLS; WHITTON; KEY; LACY; COMER; TYLER; HUMBER; TERRELL; CHRISTIAN; WILLIS, and WASHINGTON (these are all in my DEAN lineage and mostly rooted in VA). If you have any information or suggestions, or if I can be of any help to you, please email me.

  • Amherst Mill -- Owned by the Baldocks (1920-36) (66 KB)
The Amherst Milling Company was owned and operated by Walker Baldock. In the early 1920s it provided the first reliable electricity to the town. The mill ground corn and grain for the surrounding area farmers (and still does!). Walker's arm was caught in the milling machinery, and because no one was around to help him, he was forced to "cut his arm free of the equipment before bleeding to death." After recovering, he continued to operate the mill with only one arm. Walker and Grace and family lived next to the mill (see pic of house). The children used to swim in the stream that powered the mill.

  • "Mystery" Wright (51 KB)
Robert Wright's signed and noted photo-portrait was found in family belongings, probably indicating he fits in somewhere. All I know is that he was born April 16, 1840 in Norfolk, Virginia, served in the Confederate Navy on the gun-boat "Jamestown" (as 3rd Assistant Engineer), and participated in the Monitor-Merrimac battle. He later served on the Iron-clad "Richmond"; In S.C. in the torpedo fleet; and finally out of Wilmington, N.C. in "blockade running."
