History Of The Corp Family

John S. was preacher in the M.E. church for 63 years.

When he first entered the ministry the circuit extended many miles, he would make the trip horse back riding from 30 to 50 miles each sabbath and preached three sermons, this was before there were many churches built and the meetings were held in private houses or barns.

I presume there are many who still remember "old Uncle John Corp" as he was often called, for he was well and favorably known in this and adjoining counties having performed the marriage ceremony for many couples and had followed many others to their last resting place.

In 1816 he moved to Dexter City, Noble County. His neiighbors then were John Hutchinsm Sr., John Hutchins Jr., Holis Hutchins, James Morris and Parley Chapman. The road districts extened many miles at that time. Once Mr. Corp and the above named gentlemen went 14 miles in Fearing Township to remove trees which had blown down and obstructed the road.

In 1870 when the oil excitment was at its zenith he sold his home there for several thousand dollars and came to Center Township, Morgan County and purchased 100 acres from a farm formerly owned by John Wilson where he resided until the death of his wife which occured April 1872.

He then sold that farm to his son, G.S. Corp, it is now known as Corp;s upper farm and for three years after the death of his wife he made his home with his son George.

About this time his son-in-law Shubal Smith died leaving a widow and several children, then father Corp decided to spend the remainder of his life with his widowed daughter. He died Jan 24, 1884, aged 89 years 11 months. He was laid to rest by the side of his wife in Beverly cemetery. Thus ended the life of a good honorable christian.

He shouldered a knaapsack and gun and marched to the seat of war in the company of his elder brother. In one hard fought battle he and many otherswere captured and taken to Tylor, Texas prison where he remained for 10 months before he was liberated. During his captivity he obtained some horns from the Texas cattle which, with the aide of a knife, he made into powder horns, using shoe strings for cord and suspender buckles for rings.

His brother george S. has one of those horns now. The same knife which made those horns was afterwards used to effect and opening in the prision wall by which several of his comrades escaped, but the night they made their escape Tom was too sick to walk, so he was left behind.

When he was released from prision he was stone blind and was discharged from the service and sent home. He died of Asiatic Cholera in 1865, at Cincinnati, Ohio., where he had gone to receive treatment from a special oculist.
