My parents came to live to Argentina from Spain. They were from "Castilla y Leòn" community and all my life I wondered about my surname. "de Celis" derives from the roman "Celerinos".Obviously, the romans were in what today is known as Spain during several centuries.Such surname is as old as Spain itself, because exists from at least the early 15th century and first appeared in a village called "CELIS",near Nansa river,in Santander(Cantabria community). And from there it spread over the rest of Spain and then abroad. This surname appears in Villarino (Salamanca province) in the 17th century till now. There are several branches of de Celis but ours had only spanish bearers till 1960´s .Nowadays we have relatives bearing this surname in Argentina.Other family branches have spread over England,Italy,Mexico,USA,and Australia. There's an interesting book called "Los de Celis una familia de Hidalgos" printed in Spain by " Ediciones Colegio de España",written by Marìa Isabel Pèrez Lòpez that shares its copyright with a cousin of my father's whose name is Josè Luis de Celis. This book can tell you much more about this great family.I want to take the chance to thank my cousin Josè Luis for including photos where my mother Victoria,my father Manuel and my grandpas are shown in the book appendix. The family coat of arms that belongs to de Celis surname has two black bears on a plated background.Juan Josè de Celis.
