| WELCOME/BIENVENU to my family page for my GAREAU/GORROW/GARROW/GROW © family of Canada,St. Lawrence and Oswego counties of New York. My Great grandfather Joseph Gareau [Gorrow]Grow was born in Ogdensburg, St Lawrence County, NY in 1874 and died in Fulton, NY on December 9, 1941.#1 I have no parental information on Joseph, all I have is "family stories" that say he was fathered by a Boyer but raised by a Gareau mother, and that he was illegitimate or abandoned. So the object of my search is Joseph Grow's parents.#2 "Family stories" also suggest that his mother may have died when he was very young and lived with his Gareau Grandparents.#2&3 Census and church records have yielded no information on Joseph's birth or parents. I have searched the records of Notre Dame, St Mary's, the 1880 census with very little success. #5 There is a big gap of census information for St Lawrence County, so by the 1900 census he was known as Joseph Grow. JOSEPH GROW was married in Gouverneur, New York to Jennie Wright on April 3 1895 by Rev. Ure Mitchell of the Gospel United Church. Shortly before his marriage to Jennie he changed his name to Joseph Grow. Joseph was,his daughter says, born and baptized a Catholic. He farmed in different towns in the county and then moved to Fulton NY (Oswego Co) about 1924. They had 15 children (12 survived to adulthood) all born before they moved to Fulton. Their names were Nora,Cora,Dewey,Earl,Claude,Charles, Joseph,Mary,Katherine,Lucy,Lena and Geneva. Three died in infancy, Cecile (f), Paul, and Reginald. JOSEPH'S last surviving daughter and a cousin told me they were told the story of the Boyer father by Joseph's cousin Mary Demers of Ogdensburg. Mary, I believe was the daughter of Delphine Gareau [Joseph& Louise Gareau #4] and wife of Paul Demers. This is all of the information that I have uncovered with a great amount of help from others at this point. I still need parents for Joseph Grow and I would also like to find more on the family line of Joseph Gareau dit Saintonge of Quebec. #1. There is a Joseph baptized in Ogdensburg in June, 1874,Godmother Phoebe Gareau, and her brother as Godfather, this could be my Joseph, but no last name is given which would lead me to think he was illegitimate. #2 I have a death certificate in Ogdensburg, for an Auxilda/Azilda Garrow,[Isilda ?] daughter of Joseph and Louise Gareau. Her spouse is noted as Joseph Boyer. She died in January of 1882 at 26 years of age. Noe Garrow and Pascal Boyer witness the burial in Notre Dame cemetery. It has been suggested to me that this is Joseph's mother, but without a baptismal record or marriage record I cannot prove it. #3 I believe Joseph's grandparents were: Joseph Louis Gareau dit St Onge (b cir 1823/25 Canada d 1887 Ogdensburg, NY) and M.Louise Boismenu [Monette] b 9-20-1815 St Benoit,Deux Montagnes, Quebec, d 1894 Ogdensburg NY. Louise's parents were Jean-Baptiste and Marguerite Lauzon #4 I have found 8 children for Joseph and Louise 4 in St Jerome Parish of Quebec,(1851 Census district 5 sheet #1 page 111) they are:Delphine [b Curran,Ontario], Arsenne, Benjamin, Louis, Noe,[all b Ste Adele or St Jerome, Terrebonne,Quebec]Paul b.Curran,Ontario]. Isilda, Calixte born St Andre Avellin,Quebec #5 The 1880 census for Ogdensburg lists another daughter Josephine married to Paul LaMarsh who live in the same house with Joseph and Louise on Commerace Street, I can find no birth record for a Josephine yet.
