DeCamp Families in America

Laurent Jansen DeCamp was a French Huguenot who came to New Amsterdam about 1664. He first lived in New Utrecht, NY (now a part of Brooklyn), and later (about 1687-1690) moved to Staten Island, where there was a large Dutch community. He had seven children, six of whom (three sons and three daughters) married and had further descendants. Between 1727 and 1735, his sons and at least one of his daughters appear to have settled in New Jersey (Essex, Union, Middlesex and Burlington counties). There appears to have been substantial variation in how the family surname was recorded, with "d'Camp" and "Van Campen" being documented. In some cases, the surname appears to have been recorded as "Camp" with a middle initial of "D." Other names associated with the family in the early generations are Prall, Christopher, Ellens (or Ellis), Egmont (also Egmond, Edgemond, or Edgeman), Van Namen, Pauer, and de Lamars.

There are several additional DeCamp lines for which I have information, but for which the connection to Laurent Jansen DeCamp has not yet been established. These include Jacob DeCamp (m. Rhoda Pipes, Tompkins Co., NY, 1800's>MI), Mary DeCamp (m. George Sparks, Washington Co., PA, 1820's>Adams Co., OH), David DeCamp (m. Sally Ford, Giles Co., VA, 1815>IA&IL), and Joel DeCamp (m. Permillia ???, PA>OH>IL). I have much more information on all these lines, as well as some later DeCamp immigrants, that I am willing to share.
