| Our family surname Dedmon was Deadman until the Revolutionary War veteran, Mark, spelled his name Dedmon. The Dedmon family also includes spelling viariants of: Deadman, Dedman, Deadmon and Dedmond. The name Deadman probably is not in reference to a "Dead Man", but a man from Dedenham (Saxon meaning "Deep River Homestead"), in Suffolk (Saxon meaning,"South Forks" country), England, which is near the North Sea in South East England, West of Cambridge, and North of London. Much of the information I have is the result of the research of Jim Dedmon of Fresno,CA, Tim Dedmon of Chattanooga, TN and Danny McBee of Gastonia, NC. Our particular "branch" stems from Charles Deadman, born in Huntingdon County, Egland in 1440 and died in 1478 at Norwich, Norfolk County, England. His children were: John Charles, Thomas, Mary, Samantha and Elizabeth. He is the earliest record that we have of the spelling "Deadman". The information given me shows his father and sibblings to be "Debnam" and before that the name was "Debenham" In 1674 John Lemuel Deadman II, his wife and sons Thomas (great-grandfather of Mark Dedmon) and John III, arrived in Baltimore, MD from London England aboard the "Good Ship Charles", captained by Bentony Eaton. There are at least four branches of the Deadman Family, that I have been unable to connect. (Christopher Deadman, Seneca Dedmon, Samuel Dedman and the group I call the Tennessee Dedmons. Although I believe two of those are connected (Christopher and Tennessee), but I don't have the information that shows the connection. There are a number of inquiries that I have received that have at this time not been able to find where they connect, I will share information with anyone interested in the Dedmon family. Send e-mail or visit me at my home page. Be sure to view the report page for an outline of descendants of Charles Deadman. |
